Good Thursday Morning to You!

There are only two types of people in this world: those who use Post-it Notes and those who don’t. You likely know what I am referencing… and who.

First… the what.

As most of you know, a Post-it Note is a small piece of paper, typically yellow, with a re-adherable strip of glue on its back, made for temporarily attaching small notes to documents or other surfaces. The parent company, 3M, had a patent for the Post-it Note, but it expired in 1997. Meanwhile, the phrase "Post-it" and the yellow color remain registered company trademarks. The term “repositionable notes” is what should be used when referencing similar offerings manufactured by others.

Post-it Notes and its related products are available in various colors, shapes and sizes. There are at least 26 colors of Post-it Notes in addition to yellow. The product has roots back to 1968 when Dr. Spencer Silver, a 3M scientist, accidentally created a reusable, pressure-sensitive adhesive. Interestingly, the original yellow color was also chosen on accident, as it was the color of scrap paper used by the lab next door.

And now… the who.

Most all of us use Post-it Notes from time to time, and we likely have a pad or two in a drawer somewhere. Then there are those who use them as a filing system. You will see them on their computer monitors, their car dashboards, their mirrors and anywhere else with open space. And although jotting reminders down on Post-it Notes may be better than napkins or paper scraps, it is hardly an organizational system. I would not use the word “orderly” to describe the folks I know who use them heavily. Having one or two in key locations makes sense. Having hundreds of them posted anywhere and everywhere doesn’t.

Some of you may even remember (or still use), the Sticky Note app on your computer. I am guessing you are the same folks with thousands of emails stored on your computer and hundreds of text messages on your phone. And if that works for you, more power to you. Just don’t expect the rest of us to ever figure it out.

So, which kind of person are you? A Post-it Note user, or a Post-it Note hater? And when you do use them, how do you do so? Shoot me a note and let me know.

Have a thoughtful Thursday, and thanks for reading.

Jesse's Embers owner Marty Scarpino told Food Dude that Bub Light sales are in the tank. Bud's attempt to enlighten drinkers to WOKE causes has lost a third of its market. On May 11 in history ...

1934: Dust Bowl. On May 11, 1934, a massive storm sends millions of tons of topsoil flying from across the parched Great Plains region of the United States as far east as New York, Boston and Atlanta.

1981: Bob Marley Dies. In what would prove to be the next to the last concert of his tragically short life, Bob Marley shared the bill at Madison Square Garden with the hugely popular American funk band The Commodores. With no costumes, no choreography and no set design to speak of, “The reggae star had the majority of his listeners on their feet and in the palm of his hand,” according to New York Times critic Robert Palmer. “After this show of strength, and Mr. Marley’s intense singing and electric stage presence, the Commodores were a letdown.” Only days after his triumphant shows in New York City, Bob Marley collapsed while jogging in Central Park and later received a grim diagnosis: a cancerous growth on an old soccer injury on his big toe had metastasized and spread to Marley’s brain, liver and lungs. Less than eight months later, on May 11, 1981, Bob Marley, the soul and international face of reggae music, died in a Miami, Florida, hospital. He was only 36 years old.

1947: Tubeless Tires. On May 11, 1947, the B.F. Goodrich Company of Akron, Ohio, announces it has developed a tubeless tire, a technological innovation that would make automobiles safer and more efficient. The culmination of more than three years of engineering, Goodrich’s tubeless tire effectively eliminated the inner tube, trapping the pressurized air within the tire walls themselves.

Joe's Neighborhood

I know it’s not a competition, but still…

By Joe Weeg

The dark blue Irish Sea, streaked with light on the cresting waves, moves far below my winding cliff path. Listen, I get that people love the ocean. Of course, it’s not the Des Moines River or even the Raccoon, but the ocean does aggressively measure the smallness of your life. And not favorably. Some people like that. Not me.

And then there are the seagulls. They nest on the cliff walls, incessantly crying that they are just slightly annoyed. At what? The coffee is too bitter? The coffee is not bitter enough? Why are they so angry? They would do well in the United States today.

The splat of their poop paints the faces of the cliffs with bright whites against the cold stone. Apparently, they are the graffiti artists of the bird world. Although these seagulls seem to be related to Iowa turkey buzzards. I’m fairly certain they are waiting for me to drop from exhaustion so they can treat me as they do a plastic bag of garbage on the side of the road — torn to shreds. Just saying, keep your eyes open.
