Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“Hi, Shane. I read your articles in Adel Living Weekly all the time and enjoy them. Your recent column was good (My Grandfather, my Grandson and Me, March 28 - April 3). It made me think of my grandfather. He was born in 1907 and died in 2008. When he died, my uncle researched things that happened in his lifetime. Passenger airplanes, TVs, the driver’s license, tractors, highways and interstates. These are just a few of the things that came to be during his lifetime. I think your readers would like to see this as well. I wish I had a copy of what my uncle read during my grandfather's funeral. Many of the things that we take for granted were not around when he was young. Thank you for your columns. They always make me think.” - Joyce

Much has changed quickly, considering how short of a time we humans have been on this planet. - Shane

“Oh, sloppy Joes (Forgotten foods, March 31, 2025)! Our local DQ's cook had her very own recipe, they were fantastic and on 'special' on Friday. The DQ is now closed, the cook has passed and her recipe for sloppy Joes has been shared! I am still tweaking the process, but it is close enough! As for the chipped beef on toast, it doesn't compare to creamed tuna on toast! How about those frozen pot pies? I buy a couple every now and then when they are on sale just to remember why I hated them so much as a kid.” - Diane

Creamed tuna on toast? This I need to try. - Shane

“Good morning, Shane. From time to time, we make my mother's recipe for baked macaroni and cheese (Forgotten foods, March 31, 2025). Besides the obvious layer of macaroni with half a can of diced tomatoes and a layer of diced ham, repeat and then top with cheddar cheese. Spam cubes in fried rice is another favorite, soy-sauced to individual taste. ‘Dutch mess.’ Boiled and then mashed with your fork potatoes topped with lettuce, chopped onions and eggs, bacon and then drizzled with the bacon grease.” - John

I followed all that enough to make my stomach grumble. - Shane

“Last week, my wife made a Jell-O salad for her mom (Forgotten foods, March 31, 2025). Last week, my wife made goulash for her mom and my son. Last week, I made Sloppy Joes for a church potluck (I put bacon in there, too). We have Western French dressing in our fridge door. There's a Banquet TV dinner in my freezer. And there are two cans of tuna in oil in the cupboard waiting for a soon-to-be-made tuna and noodle casserole, with peas on the side, of course. So, is our household stuck in the past? Or do we just know what's good?” - Brad

This is why I like you, Brad. - Shane

Turkish eggs are not turkey eggs. Turkey and South Korea provided the stop gap egg imports that have reduced the price of U.S. eggs about 9% a week since the height of avian flu. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins told Fox Business that the imports will be discontinued once U.S. chicken hen populations are restored to pre bird flu levels.

Fat fight. As Buffalo Wild Wings, Steak and Shake and many other franchise giants transfer the cooking fats in their french fry fryers to beef tallow, McDonald's, which famously ended beef tallow as a cooking fat four decades ago, explained they have "vegetarian beef flavoring" in their french fry recipe. According to the McDonald's website, "This ensures the great-tasting and recognizable flavor" that makes them different from all other fast food fries. Guess they missed the memo about ending heavily processed food.

A wedding to remember
Couple shares how they made their day special.

By Joe Baumgarten

Few milestones are as momentous as a wedding. Family and friends often gather from near and far, the preparations may take months, and every detail is given thought. From the wedding attire to the decorations, music and venue, the couple makes countless decisions with one goal in mind: for theirs to be a wedding to remember. This month, one couple shares the scrupulous planning they did so their special day would be exactly as they envisioned. If a wedding is in your future, we hope you find inspiration from their story. Or, perhaps, their journey will spark memories of your own.

If you have ever been to a Greek wedding (or seen the popular movie), you know that they can be loud, boisterous, pull-out-all-the-stops weddings. However, if you were to ask Liz and James Garlock, Mexican weddings make Greek weddings look like yesterday's souvlaki.
James and Liz worked together at Mom's Meals for years before they really connected.

"Then, one day, I saw her standing by the printer," James says as he looks at Liz with a smile.  ...
