Good morning to you!

American poet Robert Frost said good fences make good neighbors. He may have been right.

I have been fortunate to have had good neighbors most of my life. Most is the key word. The one instance when I did have bad neighbors ended up being the motivating factor in selling the home.

But what exactly makes a neighbor bad? The answer usually comes down to an annoyance or two that simply drive many of us batty. More often than not, the culprit knows these are pet peeves of his neighbors and does more (or less) of it to simply throw gas on the fire.

So, what exactly are these annoyances? Home Gnome, a home service project connector, sent me the results of a survey of more than 1,000 U.S. homeowners about their pet peeves and opinions about their neighborhood and the folks living next door. Here are a few of the insights:

The biggest pet peeve is garbage at 27.4%. If your neighbor has garbage in his yard, it likely ends up in your yard, too. Of course, one man’s junk is another man’s treasure, but garbage is garbage. Put it in the garbage can and take the can to the curb. Done.

Landscaping and lawn care ranked second at 22.6%. Years ago, we had neighbors who would let their grass grow more than 12 inches tall. Then, when they did finally mow, it was like cutting hay. The same neighbors, maybe not surprisingly, also let their bushes on either side of their front door grow together so the front door was not even accessible. I understand that some people don’t like to mow. Then hire someone to do it. Can’t afford to hire someone? Then sell the house and move into an apartment.

Home maintenance scored third at 21.9%. Paint — or lack thereof — is a major factor, as well as broken windows or doors. These improvements are not cheap, but neither is a reduction in property valuations.

Noise concerns ranked fourth at 19.4%. I like to crank up my stereo as much as anyone, but playing it so loud that the neighbors down the street can hear it is a problem. There is an easy solution to this one, too: use headphones.

And finally, pets came in fifth at 16.5%. Pets typically are not the problem, though. Their two activities often are: barking and pooping. I have never understood how pet owners can put up with that continual barking noise. And dog poop? Here’s another simple solution: pick it up.

Unfortunately, these problems continue, which is the main reason Americans spend nearly $10 billion annually on fences. Thank you, Robert Frost.

Have a wonderful Wednesday, and thanks for reading.

Woebegone Wednesday
“100-year-old cigars" and high tech cow collars.
Washington Post reports that this new cocktail is becoming popular in the era of smoking bans. It's called “100-year-old cigar" and was created by bartender Maks Pazuniak at Jupiter Disco, a cocktail bar in Brooklyn. Its recipe calls for:
• 1 3/4 ounces aged rum, preferably Ron Zacapa No. 23
• 1/2 ounce Cynar
• 1/2 ounce Bénédictine
• 1/4 ounce Islay Scotch whisky, preferably Laphroaig 10-Year
• 1 dash Angostura bitters
• 1/4 ounce absinthe

Wall Street Journal reports that dairy farmers across the country are turning to internet-connected “smart” collars, ear and leg tags to track the specific movements and patterns of their cows. The goal is to better manage individual animals in a herd without needing as much manual labor. That’s especially important as the country’s demand for dairy has increased, but the number of farms has decreased.

The technology can also help detect irregular patterns that could indicate disease like avian flu which has decimated millions of America’s chickens over the past few years and has spread to the nation’s cows. A second strain of bird flu recently spread from wild birds and poultry to cows in Nevada.

PEOPLE & PETS
Saving lizards and snakes

By Jackie Wilson

Reptiles. Most people cringe or back off when encountering a slithering snake, a prehistoric-looking lizard or any other sticky-toed reptile.

Other folks keep these animals as pets but find they can no longer care for the reptiles.

That’s where Cam and Cole Reiman come in. They established Spock’s Sanctuary, a place where pet owners can surrender and adopt reptiles.

At the sanctuary, snakes, geckos, lizards, frogs and more all coexist in their cages and enclosures. ...

A wedding to remember
Couple shares how they made their day special.

By Jackie Wilson

Few milestones are as momentous as a wedding. Family and friends often gather from near and far, the preparations may take months, and every detail is given thought. From the wedding attire to the decorations, music and venue, the couple makes countless decisions with one goal in mind: for theirs to be a wedding to remember. This month, one couple shares the scrupulous planning they did so their special day would be exactly as they envisioned. If a wedding is in your future, we hope you find inspiration from their story. Or, perhaps, their journey will spark memories of your own.

High school sweethearts Brody and Tayla Brecht met in the spring of 2018 while they were both students at Ankeny High School. They started dating that summer, and the rest is history. In 2019, Tayla began college at the University of Northern Iowa, and they continued their relationship long distance.

That continued when Brody went to the University of Iowa to play football and baseball. Tayla joined him in 2022 when she moved to Iowa City to begin her master’s degree at the University of Iowa. Soon after, they both knew marriage was on the horizon.
