Good morning to you!

Welcome to another edition of the mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“Good morning, Shane. Once again, our friends at Fareway provide for us (Paper bag book covers, March 19, 2025). The bagger asks, ‘Is plastic OK?’ Most of the time I say yes, but if my paper grocery bag is getting full of recycled and shredded paper, they have brown paper bags available. Thanks for another memory.” - John

The honest answer to the question, “Is plastic OK?” is “no.” But we keep using it. - Shane

“Shane, I enjoyed your comments about paper sacks (Paper bag book covers, March 19, 2025). And I remember them ripping, which resulted in the dropping jars of jelly. But, I really dislike plastic sacks. The reason is our home has Jordan Creek in the backyard. When the leaves fall, we are always amazed the number of plastic bags in the branches. I have never seen a paper sack hanging out in a tree.” - Len

Great point, Len. I wholeheartedly agree. And try making a book cover out of a plastic bag. - Shane

“Shane, the use of brown paper bags was for more than book covers (Paper bag book covers, March 19, 2025). Any homemaker/cook could break a bag down to use for cookies to be placed on after they came out of the oven to rest and set up. Art and science projects would be set up on brown paper bags on the kitchen table to protect the table/table cloth. Smaller brown paper bags served as koozies before there were koozies for drunks, bums and winos. And thugs and criminals always wanted their loot/bounty stashed in a plain brown paper bag and left somewhere in a park.” - Rex

Those paper bags came in handy for the unknown comic, too. - Shane

“Shane, I always chuckle when I read your stories because of how much we have in common (The four-slice toaster, March 20, 2025). Much like you, I had a mother who was really into her toast. She also had the Cadillac model that held four slices. What always made me scratch my head was how she preferred her toast— burnt to a crisp. I mean, black toast. You would think somebody who was a connoisseur of toast would prefer a better slice than burnt beyond recognition.” - Kevin

Mom liked her hamburgers burnt, too. They looked like charcoal briquets by the time she was done grilling. - Shane

Have a thoughtful Thursday, and thank you for reading.

How pervasive are artificial food dyes?
Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is pushing to restrict the use of artificial dyes and more than a dozen states are considering legislation to do the same. Lawmakers in states from Connecticut to Utah have introduced bills to restrict artificial dyes in supermarkets and schools or require warning labels. In West Virginia, the governor is poised to sign a bill soon banning seven dyes from foods sold in the state.

Wall Street Journal found that more than 1 in 10 products contain at least one artificial dye. More than 40% of items with dyes use three or more, including popular pantry items such as some Pop-Tarts and Doritos.
The pre-Kennedy FDA has said the dyes it has approved are "safe when used in accordance with agency regulations." And that “most” children experience no adverse effects from eating foods with the added colors, though scientific research has linked dyes to hyperactivity and other problems in some cases. Confectionary products in the U.S. use synthetic dyes in half their products; baked goods, fillings and extracts in 24%; juices, sodas and other drinks in 16%; snacks and cereals in 11%.

BUSINESS FEATURE
A changing downtown landscape

Downtown Des Moines is changing, especially in regard to how people work. Before the pandemic, it was apparent that Des Moines was a hub of office buildings full of workers, many of them commuters, who created a vibrant community supporting a variety of businesses. When the pandemic set in, many employees began to work remotely, businesses cut back on office space, and some long-standing businesses closed downtown.

However, signs of recovery exist. According to the Greater Des Moines Partnership, daytime foot traffic saw an increase by 7% in 2024, which outperforms the national average in terms of recovering from the pandemic. Although signs of recovery can be seen, the downtown business district remains changed.

Krogmeier helps people and animals alike
Stays busy with volunteer work

By Lindsey Giardino

Kathy Krogmeier met the love of her life, John, at a place that’s also a love of her life — the Blank Park Zoo. Krogmeier started volunteering there in 1986, and her husband recently retired after 35 years of service as a zookeeper.

The two had the first wedding reception ever held at the zoo.

One of Krogmeier’s favorite experiences at the zoo is being a “Barnabuddy.”

“That means I get to be ‘enrichment’ for the Giant Aldabra Tortoises, which is bringing something different to their day,” she shares. “Baths, neck and shell rubs, and I’ve even started using happy classical music when I’m with them.”
