Good morning to you!

“I’m bored.”

Show me a group of kids, and I will show you at least one who can’t go an hour without saying those words. The generation doesn’t seem to matter. Some kids just get bored — or at least they frequently say they do.

But it’s not just kids. Some elderly people say they get bored, too. In her later years, my mother was one of them. Her comments were a bit ironic, as I knew if I ever said them to her when I was a child, she would have connected me with a broom, a mop or a lawn mower quite quickly.

As such, I didn’t say “I’m bored” very often. And, truly, I don’t recall ever being bored much as a kid. I could find something to do, and I was just fine doing so by myself. There was always a toy to play with, a TV show to watch or a book to read. And, if all else failed, I could spray the family dog with the garden hose, which was always entertaining.

I also recall addressing boredom with a board. Board games, actually. Chutes and Ladders was an easy one in my younger years. I failed many times in Operation at the neighbor’s house. Mom would teach me new words in Scrabble. And I would reach the highest level of frustration I knew as a child each time Dad would beat me in Monopoly. (The worst part was when he would cup his hands and raise them to his head, alternating sides with that victory sign — the same ritual I use today when I win.)

Although they weren’t officially “board” games, we also spent many hours playing Yahtzee, Score Four, Upwords, Battleship and Othello.

I thought about these games recently when a reader sent me an article entitled “20 Memorable Board Games That Have Now Faded Away.” Most of these never made their way into the Goodman home, but maybe they ring a bell with you.

Yes, I am familiar with Mouse Trap, Candy Land and The Game of Life. But how about these: Mystery Date. Dark Tower. Fireball Island. Omega Virus. HeroQuest. Key to the Kingdom. Crossfire. Buccaneer. Forbidden Bridge. Hotel. Fortress America. Scotland Yard. Survive. Shark Attack. Mall Madness. Careers. Pay Day.

Who knew so many board games existed? What was your favorite one? Send me a note and let me know.

Have a magnificent Monday, and thanks for reading.

• Target has reported sluggish sales for three years as high inflation dampened customers’ spending, and the retailer  disappointed shoppers with its product selection, antitheft measures and pricing. In response, the retailer has opened three new food distribution centers over the past two years and plans to add another next year, growing its grocery logistics network to nine temperature-controlled facilities nationwide. This moves them away from dependence on grocery wholesalers and hopefully keep stores' shelves stocked. (WSJ)

DES MOINES FORGOTTEN
A showman, a charmer and, above all, a weirdo

By Kristian Day

Barron (Barry) Christian pulled in to Hollywood back in 1970 with this publicity stunt. From the Barron Christian archives
On Feb. 17, I lost a close friend named Barron Christian. Nearly all my professional decisions in my career were influenced by him in some way. When I met him, he was semi-retired from acting professionally. In the late 1990s, he was the “Built Ford Tough” voice. He was the spokesperson for the Rocky Mountain News. He spent nearly four decades in Hollywood where he lived in Greta Garbo’s mansion and appeared as a “walk on” cast member on shows like “Lassie,” “Highway Diary” and “Columbo.” ...

A wedding to remember
Couple shares how they made their day special.

By Becky Kolosik

Few milestones are as momentous as a wedding. Family and friends often gather from near and far, the preparations may take months, and every detail is given thought.

From the wedding attire to the decorations, music and venue, the couple makes countless decisions with one goal in mind: for theirs to be a wedding to remember. This month, one couple shares the scrupulous planning they did so their special day would be exactly as they envisioned. If a wedding is in your future, we hope you find inspiration from their story. Or, perhaps, their journey will spark memories of your own.

A wedding and celebration of overcoming
Shauna and Brian Shogren have known each other for nine years. They first met when they worked together, and they began dating in May 2020. They soon faced hardship together when Shauna’s sister was diagnosed in July 2020 with B-cell lymphoma, Brian was diagnosed with skin cancer in September 2020, and their daughter, Alleigh, was diagnosed with cancer in October 2020. Shauna’s sister passed away in November 2020 but, before passing, gave her blessing on Shauna’s choice of Brian.

Attempts to contain the massive spill were unsuccessful, and wind and currents spread the oil more than 100 miles from its source, eventually polluting more than 700 miles of coastline.
