Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“Shane, not long ago I was listening to a local rock radio station and heard ‘I’m Eighteen’ by Alice Cooper, and it was immediately followed by ‘My Generation’ by The Who (Why 18?, March 11, 2025). So, I hear Alice singing about being 18 and The Who singing, ‘Hope I die before I get old.’ Glad I've made it to 73. I don't like it, but I am glad I am not 18 either.” - James

All you need now is Sister Janet Mead, and you are set! - Shane

“Shane, great piece today (Why 18?, March 11, 2025). I remember first hearing that Alice Cooper song when I was about 15, circa 1981. For about three minutes, you brought me back to my wonderful youth. Thanks.” - Ben

I do love the song. The video was a bit creepy, though. - Shane

“What was with that dig about people not wanting to live in Nebraska (Editor resigns, March 12, 2025)? We have lots of nice folks in Nebraska. Just ask me! You just need to get out of Iowa more often. LOL.” - Rich

Yes, Rich, there are many great folks living in Nebraska, including you. Most Nebraskans are born and raised there, though. The same can be said for Iowa. But moving to Husker country? I tried to convince many to do it, and it was not an easy task. Even so, I loved living there, too. - Shane

“Thanks for the paper-sack-turned-textbook-cover recollection (Paper bag book covers, March 19, 2025). In addition to my fear it will spawn a new round of nightmares during which my fat little fingers become stuck in the handles of my tiny, rounded-end scissors, I now feel like a dinosaur! PS: I couldn't even find a fax to send this.” - Brad

I am envisioning Bradward Scissorhands! Not only did those scissors get stuck on fingers, they wouldn’t cut things either. They were safe but mostly useless. - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

Sugar myth debunking, from Food & Wine's Ellie Krieger:  Myth - "Brown sugar is less refined than granulated sugar." Truth - "We’ve been trained to assume that brown things are better for us and the environment, whether we’re talking about rice, paper bags or whole-wheat flour. But brown sugar? Nope. The light or dark brown sugar (not raw, demerara or turbinado) we typically buy for baking is simply granulated white sugar combined with molasses. The molasses may provide a small amount of beneficial nutrients, but certainly not enough to classify it as a health food or as a more nutritious alternative to other sugars."

ART NEWS
Old masters and new worlds, with lawyers

By Jim Duncan

This year got off to a slow start for art markets. Christie’s Old Masters sale, considered a bellwether for art markets in general, produced better numbers than last year but not much better. Lawyers were blamed.

The would-be star of the sale, El Greco’s “Saint Sebastian,” was estimated by Christie’s to sell for between $7 and $9 million. The painting was pulled at the last minute because of legal wrangling by the Prime Minister of Romania, who claimed that King Carol I of Romania (1866-1914) was the rightful owner.

The somber “Portrait of George the Bearded, Duke of Saxony” attributed to Lucas Cranach sold for $260,000 ($327,600 with fees), settling a dispute over ownership between the Allentown Art Museum and the heirs of Henry and Hertha Bromberg, whose forebears were forced to flee Nazi Germany in the 1930s without any art.

A wedding to remember
Couple shares how they made their day special.

By Becky Kolosik

Few milestones are as momentous as a wedding. Family and friends often gather from near and far, the preparations may take months, and every detail is given thought.

From the wedding attire to the decorations, music and venue, the couple makes countless decisions with one goal in mind: for theirs to be a wedding to remember. This month, one couple shares the scrupulous planning they did so their special day would be exactly as they envisioned. If a wedding is in your future, we hope you find inspiration from their story. Or, perhaps, their journey will spark memories of your own.

On Oct. 7, 2023, Eagan Lickiss and Emily Coffey stood before family and friends at Smith Chapel on the Simpson College campus and said, “I do.” It was not lost on the couple that 31 years prior — almost to the day — Emily’s parents, Steve and Beth, did the exact same thing.

The scene outside the Cleveland Arena on a chilly Friday night in March would look quite familiar to anyone who has ever attended a major rock concert.
