Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“A good manager determines which employees can be fired and which ones should remain. A poor manager just fires people with no analysis of whether the ones fired are the best or worst employees (Tough decisions, Feb. 26, 2025). There is waste in government employment, but poor management is not the way to decrease waste because poor management may get rid of the best employees. Elon fits the poor manager example.” - George

It does seem that a better solution would have been to give each governmental arm the reduced budget and then let the managers figure out how to work within it, while clearly explaining that if they can’t figure it out, they will be replaced by someone who can. - Shane

“Powerful and effective commercial, but not an indigenous man (Pick it up, March 4, 2025). ‘Iron Eyes Cody’ was born Espera Oscar de Corti, 1904-1999. He was actually an Italian American actor.” - Mike

You are correct, Mike, and I should have caught that one. It was a touching commercial, all the same. - Shane

“Good morning Shane. Add bullet proof vests to the list. Thanks.” - John

Yikes. And I thought drinking expired milk was dangerous. - Shane

“Hi, Shane. I grew up in a funeral home, my dad being the director and embalmer, and the small-town newspaper would always refer to someone who has died as expiring. I remember asking my dad why the paper said ‘expired,’ and he said, with a slight grin, ‘Because they're not good anymore.’ After I got to the age where I started thinking on my own, I began to wonder why people don't have expiration dates. Then a pastor told me that they do, but only God knows what they are. Now you've got me thinking what it would be like to know what our expiration dates are. Would it be good to know or not? My wife said she can smell me now and then and is threatening to throw me out if it gets worse. At least I can neutralize it with some cologne.” - James

At least she didn’t say you smell like formaldehyde. - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

Washington Post published research on wine and climate changes. Some excerpts seem dire: "Napa Valley vintners wonder if cabernet sauvignon will be sustainable in the long term. Meanwhile, hybrid grapes gain favor in other parts of the country because they require fewer chemical treatments than European vinifera varieties. Some of these are new varieties developed to be hardy in severe winter conditions and northerly climes." They won’t be in wide distribution any time soon, but they might be the future, which is the here and now in Iowa vineyards.

Booze stocks are in a stupor. Barron’s said so. Gen Z in large part has turned to other buzzes than alcohol. Berkshire Hathaway, however, took a $1 billion position in Constellation Brands which imports Corona, a Mexican beer worried about tariffs. Non alcoholic beers now account for 10% of beer sales. Athletic, a non-alcohol beer, outsells every beer brand at Whole Foods.

POLITICAL MERCURY
The next big Trans fight isn’t what you think

Compound interest. Of all the strands of imagination and provocations and fear and excitement that engage one during Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jonathan Weiner’s terrific book, “Long For This World: The Strange Science of Immortality,” the one that rushes to the fore for me is compound interest.

And civil war.

Developmental kindergarten fills gap
Helps students build skills for success

By T.K. West

The Bondurant-Farrar Developmental Kindergarten (DK) Program has been offered by the district since 2003. It was created when administrators and teachers saw the need for a year between the preschool program and kindergarten. Taylor Andrews has been the Morris Elementary DK teacher for the past two years, and she enjoys the role. She says some students need the program to get off on the right foot.

“For some of them, it is their very first year of being a Morris Jay. Some of them didn't get to attend our preschool program or haven't attended a preschool program at all. I get the ability to instill that love and desire for learning. I get to show them how much fun school is,” Andrews says.
