Good morning to you!

I have often poked fun at my wife for making me transport the same bag of rocks in three different house moves over the years. “They are to put in the bottom of flower pots,” she insistently told me. “I can find new rocks when you need them,” I insistently replied. I did not move them a fourth time.

Jolene has a similar criticism for me about a certain box of wires that I have had for a few decades and continue to hang on to. Stereo speaker wires. Cable TV wires. Patch wires for old stereo components. But not just wires. Cables and cords, too. Computer monitor cables. TV electrical cords. iPad charging cords. In that box, as well, are floppy disk and zip drive players — and their related cables and cords.

Jolene even felt a need to take a Sharpie and write “WIRES” on the outside of the box. Like I didn’t know what was in there?

I know I am not alone with this collections of wires. Many of you men who are reading this can certainly relate, and your wives will attest to it.

Stand-up comedian Nina Tarr recently busted us men on this seemingly odd collection. In an Instagram video titled “Men Love Wires,” she explains how men are obsessed with keeping a box of random cables at all times. The video has more than 2 million views. If you click through and watch it, beware, as it is a bit salty. Here is an edited excerpt:

“Every man here has a box of wires and cables that travels with him from place to place, from apartment to apartment,” Tarr said, looking at her audience. She pointed to a man in the crowd and asked if he kept a box of wires. He apparently nodded, and she then apparently pointed to his female companion and said, “And you’re like, ‘You gotta get rid of these!’ And he’s like ‘Babe, what if someone comes over and needs a Nokia charger from 1998?’ ”

Tarr also pointed out how men hoard these wires and cables while not keeping things they need — like Band-Aids. Then she mocked us men again — for having firewire cables instead.

As much as I hate to admit it, Tarr may be right. I will probably never need anything from that box of wires. Even so, I refuse to get rid of it. And, keep in mind, if we ever move again, that box of wires weighs a lot less than a bag of rocks.

Have a magnificent Monday, and thanks for reading.

Major makeover for agriculture's greatest poison. Bayer has been running a barrage of ads in Iowa touting glyphosate and how it is feeding the world and saving the family farmer. In the past, glyphosate was rarely mentioned by name in deference to its top brand - Round Up. Historically, glyphosate was unknown to all save chemists and medical researchers before a Monsanto lab worker discovered that it was a very effective poison. That was in the 1970s. Previous to that, it was best known as part of a chemical cocktail used to kill syphilis. Then its true lethal value became killing weeds while not killing GMO crops.

Due to health concerns and the emerging risk of cancer, glyphosate has been banned in France, Belgium and Holland. Germany, which is widely known as "the house of chemicals" (Bayer), has also forbidden glyphosate use though that is being challenged in the courts. Bayer is reacting now to pressures to ban glyphosate in Iowa because it runs off crop fields and adds its poison to Iowa waterways. Iowa now has the second highest cancer rates in America, for two years in a row now. Cowboy Junkies summed this up best: "Ain't just the water that's not right around here."

DOGE comes to Starbucks. Starbucks will discontinue nine Frappuccinos and a handful of other drinks today as part of its overarching “Back to Starbucks” initiative.  According to the company's press release, those menu items “aren’t commonly purchased, can be complex to make, or are like other beverages on our menu.” By September, Starbucks plans to cut an estimated 30% of its current menu.

POLITICAL MERCURY
President Jimmy Carter taught my late father — and me — about ‘they say’ sourcing in journalism

By Douglas Burns

The conversation came rushing back to me sometime between the Carter grandchildren’s heart-tugging memories and Andrew Young’s magisterial closing eulogy during the funeral for President Jimmy Carter.

As a 10-year-old boy, I thrilled at the return of my father, Robert Burns, to Carroll from a late 1970s trip to Washington, D.C. — and the White House. Dad then served as the general manager and writer of the “Potpourri” column at our family’s newspaper, The Carroll Daily Times Herald.

Hot Wheels collector turned race car driver
White goes from the stands to the driver’s seat.

by Deborah Mikelson

Mike White still has a few of the Hot Wheels he received when he was 6, which is when the toys first came out, and has been collecting them ever since. His collection lines his garage walls, where his family keeps their vehicles protected from the winter elements.

“A guy’s most expensive hobby starts with a 97-cent toy when he was younger. That’s very true,” he says, adding that, at the time, had hadn’t dreamed he’d one day be racing pickup trucks.

“Cars have always been something cool in our family,” Mike says.  ...
