Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“I agree that there is wasteful federal spending, but DOGE's firing of federal employee based solely on the fact that the person is a federal employee makes no sense (Hold your judgment, Feb. 19, 2025). The best analogy I can see to that plan is to use a shotgun to kill a fly. The fly might be dead, but one of the shotgun shells could miss the fly, and there would be a big hole in the wall. It seems to me that it would make more sense for DOGE to look at programs that had already been identified as wasteful by existing sources like the Inspector General. and various media sources.” - George

What if you shot a huge nest of flies with a shotgun? - Shane

“I’m shocked and disappointed that you are grateful for Musk’s voluntary service (Hold your judgment, Feb. 19, 2025). This man, appointed by a king wanna-be, has no qualifications to lead such a massive program. The tactics he and Trump are using are authoritarian and fascist. Though there is, and always has been, waste in our government, one of the premises has been to help those in need; ask the graduated students in Burma, now contributing to their countries well-being, how they feel about the U.S. Or ask other U.S. students awarded scholarships or debt forgiveness and countries who’ve benefited from our aid. Musk, not elected, and only appointed — not vetted, etc. — has this amazing power to choose the programs he doesn’t agree with. His petulant and confusing choices are causing chaos! Firing, then rehiring; so many agencies are unsure of their futures and ability to plan for the future. Iowans will be affected with the USDA cuts among other slashed funding for housing, food, etc. Aaack. Shocked, but I shouldn’t be surprised at your perspective on this. And disappointed.” - Judy

Judy, I regret that you missed the point of my column — to help those who are being affected negatively. As the old saying goes, anger doesn't solve anything, but it can destroy everything. - Shane

“When I got my hearing aids, I heard a loud bell when the elevator door opened (Unforgettable sounds, Feb. 24, 2025). Never knew it did that. And now I wish it wouldn't.” - Margaret

Yes, there are some sounds we wish we could forget. - Shane

“I remember hearing our young baby on the 1980s baby monitor (Unforgettable sounds, Feb. 24, 2025). Sometimes crying, sometimes just awakening, cooing and adjusting to a new day. Of course later the realization that this early technology also occasionally picked up the neighbors conversations on their own baby monitor and realizing they likely heard mine as well.” - Mike

I guess Siri and Alexa aren’t the only ones listening in. - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

Knowing the time is right
Couple grows their family through fostering.

By Darren Tromblay

Andrea Schubert Davis and Kali Davis had known for a long time that they wanted to grow their Polk City family but hadn’t taken the “big” step. In April of 2020, a distant cousin of Kali's reached out to let them know that his granddaughter was in foster care and asked us if they would consider placement.
It was time.

“We knew us being foster parents was meant to be,” Andrea says.

Let legislators know that the arts are an essential part of a healthy state
One of the most powerful ways we can make a difference is by showing up. Join us for Iowa Cultural Coalition’s annual Arts & Culture Advocacy Day on Wednesday, March 5 — a key opportunity to amplify our shared commitment to the arts. While every advocate will bring their own story and priorities to legislators, the ICC has outlined 2025 Legislative Priorities to help us speak with a unified voice. Sign up (either in person or virtually).

Beaverdale Books, Thursday, March 6, 6:30 p.m.
The poems in BJ Soloy’s “Birth Center in Corporate Woods” use long, contorting lines and elliptical connections to wade through the collisions of love, eros, loss, irony, pop culture and late capitalism.
