Good morning to you!

I hummed along to a song the other day that was recorded in 1973, was certified gold, reached a peak of No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and No. 2 on the Adult Contemporary singles chart, sold nearly three million copies worldwide, and became an international hit.

And the song was about God. Imagine that.

Properly titled “The Lord’s Prayer,” the catchy tune is a pop rendition of one of our world’s most famous devotions. The music was composed by Arnold Strals, and the lyrics were sung by Sister Janet Mead, an Australian nun known for her weekly radio programs and for pioneering the use of contemporary rock music in celebrating the Roman Catholic Mass.

Maybe surprisingly, Mead was not the first Roman Catholic nun with a hit record in the United States. Some of you may remember Jeanine Deckers, known as The Singing Nun, who hit No. 1 with “Dominique” in 1963. Not to be outperformed, Mead’s “The Lord’s Prayer” became the only song to be in the Top 10 with the entire lyrics from the words of the Bible. She was nominated for a Grammy for Best Inspirational Performance.

Mead donated all of her royalties from the song’s sales to charity, and her record label used its proceeds to build a new recording studio. Regardless of your spiritual allegiances — or lack thereof — this is truly admirable.

Finding a song on the pop charts in recent years about God is rare, as the trend in music often seems to be to defy prayer rather than support it. Even so, a handful of artists in recent decades have shown enough courage to write or sing about their beliefs, regardless of any potential fallout from fans.

Kanye West did so with “Jesus Walks.” The Doobie Brothers told us “Jesus Is Just Alright.” U2 brought us “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For,” while country music stars Johnny Cash and Dolly Parton brought us “Old Rugged Cross” and “Old Time Religion.” Surely, I missed others.

Of course, some songs appear to have religious themes, but we learn later that the artists’ intentions were quite the opposite. In the big scheme of things, that’s OK, as we could not have right without wrong, light without dark, good without evil. And, as such, we are reminded to forgive those who trespass against us. Whether you pray or not, that’s a good message for all of us. Thank you, Sister Janet Mead.

Have a terrific Tuesday, and thanks for reading.

Bob Pace is Iowa’s king of guitar

By Jackie Wilson

There’s a king of pop. A king of rock. And there’s an Iowa king of guitar as well. Although that’s not Bob Pace’s definition of himself.

But take a listen to decide for yourself.

When I first heard Pace’s shredding guitar, I was mesmerized. His Eric Clapton/Buddy Guy/Jimmy Page mash-up shows Pace ranks up there with the guitar greats. Yet, this guy is in our own backyard.

Pace has honed his craft for 50 years. His latest foray is with the Central Iowa Blues Society. During this year’s festival, he established an Iowa Blues Hall of Fame Showcase, featuring all Iowa Blues Hall of Famers including Scott Eggleston, Dwight Dario, Greg Sutherland and Steve E. George, along with guests George and Gil Davis.
