Good morning to you!

You just can’t forget some sounds. At least I can’t seem to. Most of the ones I hang onto were implanted in my brain as a youth. Even after years of not hearing them, those familiar sounds bring back fond memories.

I was remined of this recently when hearing the cow-mooing sound from a Fisher Price barn door. If you had that toy as a child, you know exactly what I am referring to.

I also can’t seem to forget the annoying buzzer that would go off when I failed on the Operation board game.

I truly enjoyed my Electronic Football handheld game. I would sneak it under my bed sheets and play it at night, only to have my brother in the room next door yell, “Turn it off!” when he would hear the familiar touchdown tune.

Playing Rock ’Em, Sock ’Em Robots was a pastime in my childhood home. My brother and I would bob and weave and punch those buttons with our thumbs to try to defeat the other robot by knocking its block off. Boing!

Familiar sounds are not all about toys, though. How about hearing the snow crunch below your feet? Or a fishing line being cast in a lake? Or the “ding, ding” of the bell when driving into a service station?

Most all of us can recognize sounds of certain foods or drinks, too. Bacon sizzling on the griddle. A champagne cork going off. Popcorn popping on the stove. And the sound of fizzy soda poured on ice.

Some familiar sounds are also from technology of days gone by. The screech of internet dial-up. The clinking of coins dropping in a pay phone. The crackling and hissing of a vinyl record. The clicking of typewriter keys and the ringing bell from the return. And the dreaded sound of tape crinkling in a cassette player.

I also fondly recall the sound of static on the TV when no channels were available after midnight, the dialing sound of a rotary phone, and the familiar intro music to Pac-Man.

Yes, sounds can be meaningful, and I surely missed a few recognizable ones from your memory bank. Send me a note and let me know.

Have a memorable Monday, and thanks for reading.

Back to the business
Japan opened its Strategic Rice Reserves to combat the highest ever prices and scarcity. Japan's CPI showed rice prices up 70% from a year ago. The move was criticized because the reserves were supposed to be for dire emergencies and acts of God, not inflation. Japan’s rice crop was below average because of bad weather and looks to be recovering in the near future. A weak yen compared to the U.S. dollar is driving food inflation as Japan imports more food than other Asian countries. (NHK-Tokyo)

Chili's continues to outperform all their immediate rivals in the otherwise troubled "full service casual" genre. Since 2024 began, Chili's sales are up 30% while other fast casual chains are down 3.6%. Brinker International, the company behind Chili’s, is revamping the chain’s menu and remodeling its restaurants in a bid to keep guests’ interest, part of which was sparked by Chili's success making their food photogenic on social media. Chili's mozzarella sticks are one of the most posted foods on Tik Tok and Instagram. Chili's has been around half a century but traffic had dipped considerably between 2000 and 2024. The turnaround is credited to downsizing a "bloated" menu. Chili's was afraid to cut an underperforming item because they thought every dish had fans who would quit coming. The company now is slashing low-selling menu items and reducing the number of offerings by around 25% over the past two years. (WSJ)

LUNCH WITH...
Trang Pham and Thien Olson

By Jim Duncan

Trang Pham and her sister, Thien Olson, are young immigrants making their way in entrepreneurial Iowa while also holding down impressive day jobs and becoming family nuclei.

We asked them to lunch and met at Trang’s newest Eggroll Ladies café, in the Equitable Building. When I arrived, Trang explained that Thien was too slammed with new business obligations to drive downtown, so her sister hooked her up via telecom.

A special bond
Local grandparents share why living close to their grandkids is so important to them.

By Ashley Rullestad

Brianne and Nick Kiley are parents of a large family of six kids. Although raising kids is great, Brianne says everything changed when granddaughter, Vivienne, came along almost two years ago.

“Our time with her has been so life-giving,” she says. “They tell you being a grandparent is the neatest thing in life, and they aren’t joking. It truly is. I am thankful she lives so close to us and we can pour into her life as much as we get to.”

The Kileys live in Dallas Center, and their son and daughter-in-law live in Grimes. Along with Vivienne, they are expecting another granddaughter in April. The families spend each Tuesday night together, just like when, years ago, Brianne, her son, her mom, and her Grandma Josephine would spend every Tuesday night together. ...
