Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“After revealing that it costs over 3 cents to make a penny, it made me wonder what it costs to make other coins (I got a nickel, Feb. 13, 2025). And what other manufactured items are made at a loss?” - James

You don’t want to know. - Shane

“Good morning, Shane. Here on the south side of Ankeny, our Fareway food store allows the local Scouts to place a trailer in their lot for folks to donate cans and bottles to support their programs (I got a nickel, Feb. 13, 2025). I've also read on Facebook of groups or individuals willing to come pick them up from your home. Thanks for another thoughtful read.” - John

Fareway certainly deserves kudos for providing the space for Scouts to do this. - Shane

“The St. Pius X Knights of Columbus collects redeemable cans and bottles, including liquor and wine bottles, on the second Saturday of each month from 9-11 a.m. on the south side of the church parking lot 3663 66th St., Urbandale (I got a nickel, Feb. 13, 2025). This is at the southeast corner of 66th Street and Douglas Avenue, a couple blocks west of Merle Hay Mall. Metro Waste Authority also has a program that allows people to donate their redemption money to a charity. The info is on Metro Waste Authority website.” - George

That’s helpful, George, and I am glad to share with our readers. - Shane

“We started using Droppett to return cans, and it's a game changer (I got a nickel, Feb. 13, 2025). Put a label on the bag of cans, put it in the large container by Urbandale High School, and the money goes into your Droppett account. Easy peasy! No mess or waiting in line!” - Carol

Well, I learn something every day. Thank you, Carol. - Shane

“Great nostalgia about signage (Mike Rowley and signs, Feb. 14, 2025). So many cities have adopted restrictive sign ordinances, I'm not sure if some of these could be installed today.” - Chuck

Signs of the (past) times. Some of those do seem to be the best ones. - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

B-Bops, Central Iowa's largest chain, announced it will open its first eastern Iowa store, in Cedar Rapids, and plans to expand to the Quad Cities, too. (CR Gazette)

Wallet studied numerous prices to determine where people spend the most and least parts of their incomes in restaurants. The results showed that the factor that mattered most was the cost of housing — real estate, mortgages and rentals. New Jersey (1.5%), Maryland (1.54%) and Massachusetts (1.54%) were the top three places for the lowest percentages of income spent eating out. Mississippi (2.64%), West Virginia (2.57%) and Arkansas (2.49%) were the bottom three. Iowa was stuck in the middle with Utah.

A special bond
Local grandparents share why living close to their grandkids is so important to them.

By Ashley Rullestad

Angie Williams, a native of Chicago, spent years as a consultant traveling and living in the San Francisco Bay Area. At one point, her job required her to travel, and she would often fly to Des Moines as family members began to migrate to the area during the 2000s.

Each visit included spending time with my children, grandchildren, my brother, nieces and nephews. When one of my great nephews needed a kidney transplant at 10 years old, my sister, a registered nurse, moved to the area to be closer to her grandchildren. As I continued to visit, I noticed growth in the area and found myself attracted to the Ankeny community.” ...

The answer to the last riddle: What was the most popular band in caveman times? Stone Age Temple Pilots! - Gail Tomlinson, Rex Post. Or, Rocky and the Petroglyphs! - Judy Anderson. "The Rolling Stones" - or almost any kind of "rock" band! Then there's the wretched song called "Troglodyte" (Caveman) from 1972 by The Jimmy Castor Bunch. - Carolyn Rogers
