Good morning to you!

“Valuable advice, my friend (A simple T-shirt, Feb. 11, 2025). I shared it with my sons.” - Brad

Mark Schwab was one of the greatest high school wrestlers in Iowa. When he was a kid, he would win the youth tournaments while wearing a T-shirt, blue jean cut-offs and tennis shoes — just to prove a point. - Shane

“Shane, those Algona Little League Shirts should be SOP (standard operating procedure) in every community (A simple T-shirt, Feb. 11, 2025). Maybe throw in a ball cap since we know the dangers of too much sun and help your vision for later years. But it has gotten out of hand. Expensive equipment, travel teams, manicured fields and damn-near tailored uniforms. In my day, we didn't all have our own bats, balls might be taped, and gloves maybe shared but rarely brand new. Those were ancient and simpler times. Summers were hot, bikes were becoming Sting-Rays, and the swimming pool was the major relief from the heat. Swim till 9 p.m., come home and shower, off to bed to get up and do it all over again. Falling asleep was done to the crickets and listening to the corn grow.” - Rex

I do miss those days — except for the crickets. - Shane

“Shane, I read your column on the difference between anxious and eagerness (Eager, Feb. 12, 2025). I realized I am anxious to read your article every morning. Have a great week!” - Kevin

Now you are giving me anxiety. - Shane

“You were right, the first few words of the song and it was stuck in my head the rest of the day (I got a nickel, Feb. 13, 2025)! A great reminder of my younger days when Sunday afternoon drives would find us trolling ditches for treasure. Mom would holler, ‘NICKEL!’ Dad would stop the car, and my brother or I would scurry to retrieve it. Bonus points if it was in a clean and dry location! In her later years, Mom would walk out to the highway, picking up cans as she went. One day a trucker slowed down and asked if she'd like a few more? He opened the passenger side and the floorboard was covered. He was glad to be rid of them, and she thought she'd struck it rich! The Boy Scouts maintain a small wagon for cans and bottles parked at the south Fareway in Ankeny. We're happy to do our part in recycling and support these young men. One person's trash is another person's treasure! Thanks for your great columns and reminders of simpler times!” - LuAnn

It was all fun and games until you found one half full of tobacco spit. - Shane

Have a thoughtful Thursday, and thank you for reading.

More bad news for booze and George Clooney's brand
U.S. sales volume of tequila, mescal and other agave-based spirits were roughly flat in 2024, according to International Wine and Spirits Record. Sales fell in ultra-premium tequilas (priced between $45 and $99.99) and grew in the middle tiers (priced between $22.50 and $44.99). Diageo said it is now re-positioning Casamigos at a lower price point than its Don Julio brand. Casamigos is the overpriced tequila, probably overvalued because of its association with co-founder George Clooney. Clooney has the luck of the Irish. He sold out to Diageo three years ago for $1 billion when the brand was hitting above its weight class.

The Brewers Association declared that more places to drink beer closed in the last year than opened. That reversed a long trend.

Rescued from a chicken coop

By Jackie Wilson

At an auction sale site, two puppies were found huddled together, abandoned in an old chicken coop.

The puppies were taken to a foster organization, Oh My Dog Rescue (OMD). OMD is a foster-based organization that saves abandoned or surrendered dogs, giving them a second chance at life.

The foster family for the abandoned puppies contacted Mitch and Missy Pattee and mentioned they had a dog for adoption.

She taught one period of seventh-grade girls’ choir at the middle school and spent the rest of her day teaching fifth- and sixth-grade general music and choir at DeSoto.
