Good morning to you!

Thousands of employees in their probationary periods lost their jobs recently in an effort by President Trump to slash the size of the federal government. About 75,000 more agreed to the voluntary “deferred resignation” program offered to federal workers who agree to quit later this year in exchange for being paid for several more months.

These moves are part of an overall effort led by Elon Musk to reportedly cut $2 trillion in government spending. Some of you are quite pleased to have the “fat” cut from our federal government. Others of you are concerned about the after-effects and the people who lost their jobs. A growing number of you are in both camps, as am I.

There is no question our federal government has spent our tax money in ways many of us find frivolous. A $45 million scholarship program for students in Burma. More than $20 million to create a “Sesame Street” in Iraq. More than $59 million to house illegal immigrants in New York City hotels. The list goes on… and in much larger numbers.

Meanwhile, Americans lost jobs. If you have ever been fired, laid off or downsized, you know the feeling, and it’s not good. I was with a friend this past week who received a phone call from his wife, a federal worker who just received the dismissal letter. She was let go immediately, and she, her husband and their young children are scrambling to determine how to make ends meet. That’s real.

I held a similar view on COVID. Only old, overweight people with prior health conditions were truly at risk, I thought, and they should stay home while the rest of us go about business as usual. Then I attended the funeral of a young, healthy man who died from COVID. That’s real.

Yes, Elon Musk is brilliant, and I am thankful for his voluntary efforts. Does he have a big ego? Is he overconfident at times? Is he quirky? Sure. Those words also described Einstein, Tesla and Edison and define nearly all of the truly smart people I know today. Even so, Musk and the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) also need inspections and should be held accountable for their actions. His ties to Big Tech alone make me uncomfortable. That’s real.

My point is that it is easy for us to be judgmental until the topic at hand affects us personally. We need to cut our spending. We need to pay down our debt. We need to scrutinize where our tax dollars are being spent. I don’t question any of those goals. I do, though, question those in the federal system who seem overly concerned about anyone looking at their spending of our tax dollars. What are they hiding?

I don’t have answers, but I do know we need to be real and let the process work while doing all we can to help those who are affected negatively. As of right now, what other choices do we have?

Have a watchful Wednesday, and thanks for reading.

Woebegone Wednesday
Winners and losers. Recent earnings reports have been mixed for America's biggest restaurant companies. McDonald's reported that same store sales were down 1.4% in the last quarter. They said that customers were spending less per visit. Yet they also announced they will build 2,200 new restaurants this year, an increase over last year. Only 600 of those will be in the USA. With that much international sales dependence, Big Mac is vulnerable to a stronger dollar — something the smart money predicts. Starbuck's, Pizza Hut and KFC also reported sales were down. But Chili's, Chipotle and Taco Bell sales were up.

If you were thinking this year was a bad one for the crud, you were right. CDC reported 24 million cases of seasonal flu and 310,000 hospitalizations since Oct. 1. This is already the worst seasonal flu season in 15 years, and it's just peaking now. That is never good for the health of restaurants.

Leo Landis served his last day as State Curator and Curator for the State Historical Museum of Iowa yesterday. He is moving on to the Wisconsin Historical Society, which is opening a huge new building. His term in Iowa was brilliant, particularly for emphasizing the connections between food and Iowa history. For instance, Landis visited meat lockers in every Iowa county that had one. He was bestowed the title Professor of Bacon by the Blue Ribbon Iowa Bacon Festival for the effort. Landis previously worked for Iowa Living History Farms and Salisbury House. All are much better off for his savvy and enthusiasm. Fare thee well good sir.

ART NEWS
All is not as it seems

By Jim Duncan

This month’s art news is filled with dreams, confusions and deceptions with lawyers going to court to argue that fake art is the same as the real thing it imitates. Is all art now trompe l’oeil?

Exhibit one: Sally Mann has been arguably America’s most famous photographer since her “At Twelve; Photographs of Young Women” documented the creepiness of a child molester who was soon after shot dead by the abused 12-year-old-girl’s mother, in 1988. Time magazine proclaimed Mann “America’s greatest photographer” in 2001. She has used the American South and her own children as subjects of haunting beauty.

Pondering history
Elodie Opstad gives readers a glimpse of Warren County.

By Becky Kolosik

When Elodie Opstad sees her new book, “This is the Place: Glimpses of Warren County” on the shelf at independent bookstores like Pageturners, she can’t help but look back on the journey that brought her here.

Opstad credits her interest in history and research to an eighth-grade teacher.

“Mr. Eiler was a terrific teacher who imparted the fundamentals of research to his students,” she recalls. “His lessons stuck with me, and I have applied them at various times throughout my life to many topics, subjects and fields of study.”
