Good morning to you!

Anxious or eager. Eager or anxious. Many people use these words interchangeably. The difference is splitting hairs, they say.

I used to be in that hair-splitting group — until about 30 years ago. Then, Tammy Pearson, who edits this newsletter today, taught me the difference while editing my work back then. I was writing about something I was looking forward to and stated I was “anxious for it.”

“Does it give you anxiety?” she asked.

“Not at all,” I said. “I am looking forward to it.”

“Then you are eager for it to happen, not anxious,” she confidently stated.

That made sense, but me being me, I had to follow the trust-but-verify process. So, I reached for the dusty, hardbound edition of Webster’s Dictionary in the office (remember, this was 30 years ago) and looked up the words. The meanings might have changed slightly in the past three decades, but here is what I found in the online version today:

Anxious: characterized by extreme uneasiness of mind or brooding fear about some contingency

Eager: marked by enthusiastic or impatient desire or interest

Extreme uneasiness? Nope.

Brooding fear? Not at all.

Enthusiastic or impatient desire or interest? That sounds more like it, except for the impatient thing. I am not impatient, dammit.

As such, I now try to avoid the word anxious in my writing and in my speech, unless, of course, I truly have anxiety about something.

Splitting hairs? Maybe. But I have been eager to use these words correctly for 30 years — because an editor correcting me gives me anxiety.

Have a wonderful Wednesday, and thanks for reading.

Woebegone Wednesday
• The heaviest 20% of alcohol drinkers consumed 90% of American booze. That was learned in a study by equity research firm Bernstein. This drastic stat is likely going to get worse before it gets less frightful. Gen Z (born 1997-2012) is voluntarily abstaining from all forms of booze more than any previous generation since Prohibition.

• Nobody in town does a better job of recreating the woebegone era of supper clubs than Maxie's with a full menu of ice cream cocktails. Recently they announced a menu of daily specials that also hit the secret chords played to invoke mid-20th century memories: beef and noodles over mashed potatoes, baked lasagna, hand pattied Graziano's sausage, chicken and noodles over mashed potatoes, and prime rib.

CENTER STAGE
‘Life of Pi’ coming to Des Moines

By John Busbee

It’s simple performing arts math. Pi r2 may determine the area of a circle, but “Pi,” the stellar award-winning theatrical experience, is bringing a prelude of anticipation when the “Life of Pi” national tour makes a week-long stop at Des Moines Performing Arts beginning Feb. 25.

Based on Yann Martel’s international bestselling novel, “Life of Pi,” celebrated actress and writer Lolita Chakrabarti, Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, used Martel’s immersive story as the source material for her stage adaptation. Yes, the film version received much attention, garnering 11 nominations and four wins at the 2013 Academy Awards, but Chakrabarti shares how the book was her muse.

Meet Sophia Volk
Teacher turned counselor supports student mental health.

By Lindsey Giardino

Sophia Volk began her career in education as an eighth-grade English/language arts teacher in Des Moines Public Schools.

“But when I noticed the need for mental health services and how positive mental health helps education, I knew I needed to enter into school counseling and provide support where I can do so,” she shares.

Determined to make a difference, she returned to her alma mater, Grand View University, to earn her master’s degree. During this time, her aunt-in-law, Kathy Erickson, the high school counselor in Winterset, told her about a job opening at Winterset Junior High.
