Good morning to you!

Have you had a bout of the wintertime sniffles yet? Or something worse? If not, you likely will. When you do get sick, do you have any tried and true remedies you rely on? Most of us have some that were handed down by our parents or grandparents that we think make a difference — or at least make us feel a bit better while the sickness works its way out of our bodies.

Eating chicken noodle soup has been a common practice for centuries. Generations from virtually every culture swear by the benefits. The warmth of the broth. The rich, savory flavors of the chicken, vegetables and noodles. Campbell’s was right. Soup is good food.

How about hot tea? There is something about hot tea when I am sick that is irreplaceable. It relieves stuffiness. It soothes my sore throat. And that warmth just feels good.

My go-to when I am really sick is the blue liquid nighttime cold medicine. It feels warm going down, and it knocks me out. I just can’t take it too late at night, or I am worthless the next morning.

A hot bath also feels great when my body aches. Getting undressed and into the tub isn’t enticing when I am sick, but once I am soaking, the relaxation arrives. Getting out isn’t fun either, but it is all worth it.

I can deal with most parts of being sick, but the sinus pressure is the worst. I realize nasal spray can be a challenge to wean from, but it sure provides instant relief. Neti pots and similar devices help me somewhat, too — as does a humidifier.

Orange juice isn’t just for breakfast anymore. Some people swear by loading up on the natural vitamin C when they feel a cold coming on. And it tastes good. Why not?

In my father’s day, most everyone seemed to rely on taking two aspirin to cure everything. Dad had a little tin of Bayer aspirin in his pocket at all times, just in case.

When I was really sick as a child, Dad would put vapor rub on a hand towel and wrap it around my neck. It seemed to do the trick, or at least it smelled and felt like it was doing something. I still rely on it from time to time.

The best remedy for me, though, is sleep. When I am tired, my body lets me know. And some good, old-fashioned rest seems to be the best medicine.

Surely you have some other cold remedies that make you feel better. Send me a note and let me know.

Have a terrific Tuesday, and thanks for reading.

BELLY UP TO...
Shirley’s Bar & Grill

By Jackie Wilson

One of West Des Moines’ newest restaurants is NOT a sports bar. At least that’s what it says on the back of the servers’ T-shirts.

Take a peek into Shirley’s Bar & Grill, located at 9250 University Ave. in West Des Moines, where you’ll find a lively atmosphere, good food and tasty drinks — all at price points that won’t strain the wallet.

On a recent visit, 1980s music played along to a Madonna video, an ode to the old MTV days. A ballgame or two showed on a few screens, but sports isn’t the focus. Instead, search for your favorite oldies movie star or musician photos from those that are plastered on a huge wall. In the corner, another wall of celebrity mug shots offers conversation starters. Perched on a long shelf above the booths are colorful lava lamps with iridescent blobs floating dreamily in all directions.

Tuesday touts
• The hottest trend in whiskey, and whisky, is aging them in Japanese Mizunara oak barrels. Distillers value the leaky, expensive casks for the delicate flavors they impart. Whiskies aged in them fetch impressive prices. The Distilled Spirits Council of the United States reported that U.S. imports of whiskey from Japan rose nearly 20-fold over the past decade, reaching a value of more than $80 million in 2023. Mizunara barrels can run between $4,000 and $8,000 apiece as the trees take 200 years to mature and must be felled in the legally sanctioned way. Glendalough Distillery in Ireland’s County Wicklow was the first to use Mizunara. Rabbit Hole Bourbon released its 15-year-old Founder’s Collection Limited-Release Mizunara with a price tag of $1,500. Barrell Bourbon has several in the $40-100 range. Dewar's and Chivas Regal have Mizunara Scotches in the $23-50 range.

Seeing the need in the community
Olsens among those who foster children.

For a foster child, going to a new home can often be a daunting task, and understandably so.

Laura and Buck Olsen of Johnston know this all too well, having brought a foster toddler into their family of Max, Kendall, Charlie, Zoe, Tate, Mia and Finn recently.
But like any good parent, they stepped up and did what was necessary: make the child feel at home.

“It’s so important to know that the kids may be very scared and uncertain as they move in with a new family,” says Laura Olsen. “Doing everything you can as a foster parent to make the child feel safe, cared for and keeping whatever routines are possible are all so important when a child comes into foster care.”
