“Located just 41 miles from the Spam Museum in Austin, Minnesota, is Fox River Mills in Osage, which has been manufacturing premium socks since 1900 (Socks, Dec. 17, 2024). They are one of my favorite sources for Merino wool socks. Time your trip correctly and you can even take in the great annual sock sale at the Mitchell County Fairgrounds.” - Dan

“At Y2K, my sons were 9 and 6 (New Year’s Eve, Dec. 31, 2024). We played some games, and we let them stay up to watch the ball drop on TV. But, we gave each of them a ball, had them stand on the couch, at the end of the countdown, they dropped the balls. Wish I had a video to see those faces over and over. They still talk about it.” - Brad
I think we should still do this. I am starting next year. - Shane
“Happy New Year, Shane. I, too, am a Vikings fan and have been since I was in fourth grade; that is a long time (Vikings, Jan. 1, 2025). I agree that the dream team was Fran the Man, Chuck Foreman, etc. Then came AP, Chris Carter and Randy Moss. I love our current team and hope that leadership of Minnesota resigns Sam Darnold for another contract that will keep him in place. We have a good thing going, and whether we win or lose in the playoffs, I will still remain loyal and true. My husband, Brad, is also a Vikings fan and jokes that when he passes, he wants the Vikings to be his pall-bearers so they can let him down once last time. Skol!” - Lu Anne
That is too funny… and too true. - Shane
“Dear Shane. I, too, am a Viking’s fan (Vikings, Jan. 1, 2025). Skol! I started loving the Vikings during a Thanksgiving day game when I was a child. The sports announcer started talking about the Purple People Eaters, and I fell in love. The rest of the family followed 49’ers or the Cowboys, but I stayed with the Vikings. Over 50 years later, I am still a fan. I do love the quarterback on the Chiefs, but I hope he drops the ball when he plays against the Vikings. He never has so far, but he won’t be quarterback forever. Green Bay is finally retired, and that’s why Vikings are so good this year. At least that’s my thinking.” - Donna
I am thinking we Vikings fans are out of luck… again. – Shane

Read the latest CITYVIEW | | FOOD DUDE La Mie remains true to its French roots
By Jim Duncan
Because we have been covering the local food scene since the late 1980s, we’re often asked what jump-started the Des Moines restaurant renaissance. Good bread is our best answer.
A quarter century ago, I ran into philanthropist Maddie Glazer several times on connecting flights home through O’Hare. We both usually carried on bread, usually from San Francisco in my case and New York in hers. Des Moines bread at that time was best covered by Fancy Bread’s crispy crusted loaves that were served in most Italian restaurants. The words “artisan,” “lamination,” “ciabatta,” “focaccia,” “baguette” and even “sour dough” were fairly unknown in Iowa. | | READ MORE |

First shots fired in the Make America Healthy Again wars. The FDA got a jump on Bobby Kennedy, Jr. by announcing last week that it intends to disallow soft drinks from SNAP (food stamp) eligibility. Coca Cola and its fellow high fructose corn syrup pimps are hunkered down to resist. Their argument, for what it's worth, is that the big soda companies are also selling low and no calorie drinks and that they put calorie labels on their cans. Lobbyists for the big soda companies are also trying to hire people close to Trump and "get in front of people close to Kennedy and Brooke Rollins, Trump’s nominee to head the Agriculture Department, which administers SNAP benefits." (Washington Post)
This week's food myth debunking comes from Food and Wine magazine. The myth: Reducing sugar won’t affect a recipe. "No, specially in baking, sugar affects much more than how the food tastes. Because it attracts water, sugar helps baked goods retain and maintain moisture. You also need sufficient sugar for creaming, which creates a matrix of butter and sugar that traps air." (Becky Krystal)

Featured in the current issue of Adel Living magazine | | Rhythms of Grace: a mission to help others Improving lives through horseback riding therapies
By Rich Wicks
Dawn Carlson and the volunteers at Rhythms of Grace, along with the organization’s clients, have found many benefits in “horsing around.” But it’s not disorganized horseplay; the therapies are tried and true ways to improve lives, as Carlson explains.
“Rhythms of Grace is a volunteer-driven nonprofit charity organized in 2020 that partners with special horses to provide healing and hope to children and adults with special needs,” she says. “This mission was placed on my heart over many years, through many blessings and many tears.”
As the founder of Rhythms of Grace, Carlson has invested much time and energy into bringing her vision to reality. | | READ MORE |
