Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“Hendrix (Mononyms, Dec. 16, 2024). I would say more, but that would detract from the whole mononym thing, wouldn't it?” - Dave.

Yes, Dave, it would. Please tell Rex and John. - Shane

“What other famous one-named folks did I miss (Mononyms, Dec. 16, 2024)? Babe; Slash; Twiggy; Messi; Reynoldo; Iman; Madonna; Flea; Pink; Halston; Fabio; Kerskin; Sade; Sinbad; Rihanna; Seal; Adele; Celine; Banksy; Oprah; Mr. T; Sly; Ringo; Wilt; Magic; Tiger; and OJ.” - Rex

Good job searching the internet, Rex. - Shane

“Good morning, Shane. A few came to mind: Rocky. Whoopi. Trump. Tinkerbelle. Barney. Mohammed (Mononyms, Dec. 16, 2024). Garth. Sting. Slash. Pitbull. Tarzan. Geronimo. Cleopatra. Madonna. Don't ask today's generation about Popeye, Bluto or Wimpy. Untold number of superheroes. Thanks for the memories.” - John

Rocky, but no Bullwinkle? - Shane

“Tiger, Michael, Jr. (Mononyms, Dec. 16, 2024). Those popped as I did a children’s sermon once on the same subject. Had the kids so confused nobody could come up with Jesus!” - Barry

Junior Samples? I liked him, too. - Shane

“Hi, Shane. I enjoy your columns. You may have forgotten this name: Tiger? (Mononyms, Dec. 16, 2024). Have a good day and Merry Christmas!” - Matt

Tony the Tiger? How could I forget. He’s grrrrreat. - Shane

“Almost hate to point this one out this time of year, Shane, but we know Santa, and we know of another, when the letters are rearranged, who brings the opposite mindset (Mononyms, Dec. 16, 2024). Both are known equally in number, and how ironic that their purposes for existence are so different.” - James

I considered adding Lucifer, but it didn't seem right for the season. - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

FOOD DUDE
Harbinger of invention

By Jim Duncan

December is the month of reckoning. We sum things up and calculate where we stand as a year ends and another looms. 2024 should go down as a transitional year. For the first time since COVID-19 shutdowns, new places were opening more often than old places were closing. More new restaurants opened this year in Ankeny than in all of central Iowa four years ago.

Reckoning the year in food and hospitality
Food event of the year. Niman Ranch's Farmers' Appreciation Week in Des Moines last August topped its own high standards with three days of seminars, farm visits, state of the art technology, hog roasts and hospitality. CEOs, authors, professors, acclaimed chefs and farmers mingled. Temple Grandin, the world authority on both autism and animal welfare, hung out with everyone for two days before delivering the keynote speech. CBS sent rising star Jamaica Ponder with crew to cover the event, but no local media, other than Daily Umbrella, bothered.

Holiday recipes
Residents share the foods that make the season bright.

By Joe Baumgarten

Favorite dishes are often at the heart of holiday gatherings. Their aromas wafting through the house signal time to join family and friends in celebration, reminiscing and gratitude. Their tastes spark memories and conversation. For many, certain recipes are a holiday must. They are inextricably woven into the fabric of the season, and the festivities wouldn’t feel complete without them.

Holiday fruit drops
“I always loved coming home from college to see what cookies and bars my mother had baked for Christmas,” Susan Pogge says. “She always had 14 different kinds — some, our favorites, plus some that were new, ready to be reviewed by our family. The standard favorite was holiday fruit drops. It wasn’t until I was married and wanting to make them in my own home that I actually looked at the recipe for the first time. It seemed like a great recipe because of the special ingredients. It is an easy-to-make soft cookie chock full of candied cherries and expensive dates. These are not the kind of fruit that is used for fruit cakes; instead, they are the delicious red and green candied maraschino cherries that only appear in grocery stores at Christmas time.
