I have a foot fetish. But wait. Before you think I am more weird than I am, read on. It’s not so much a foot fetish that I have as a sock fetish — and not those trendy socks some guys wear with repetitive decorations on them. I have a thing for socks that keep my feet warm. That’s it.
Well, maybe it’s not that simple. I do have some requirements. I don’t like socks that droop like the skin on the neck of a French bulldog. I have enough things drooping at my age. And I don’t like the ones that are so tight they leave indentations on my legs and cut off the blood supply. I prefer to have feeling in my toes. Socks have to fit just right. It’s a Goldilocks and the three bears kind of thing.
I recall my dad’s socks, especially when he wore them with his green shorts and sandals on Sunday summers. The silky black dress socks contrasted nicely with his milky white legs. It wasn’t cool, but Dad didn’t care.
When I was a kid, I had a different take on socks than my father. Mine had to be angelic white and pulled up to my knees with a few horizontal stripes at the top. Those looked especially good with those tennis shoe/roller skates that I always wanted but never had.
Years later, socks went the other direction and were not to be over the ankle. This was fine for the summer months but allowed a bit of a draft to happen in Iowa’s winters. Some of these socks were white. Some were black. Many were other colors, too, but none even approached the calf.
When our children were teenagers, I would struggle to find my black dress socks. Our oldest daughter, Sara, seemed to like them and “borrowed” mine quite often. I am still trying to figure that trend out.
Today, I stock my sock drawer with supplies from hardware stores and farm stores. Those places seem to understand what middle-aged men want. Solid colors. Perfect tension. Up to the calf. And, most importantly, extra warm.
And they are not just for men. If Goldilocks wore socks, she would certainly approve, too.
Have a terrific Tuesday, and thanks for reading.

Read the latest CITYVIEW | | LUNCH WITH... Allison Pohlman at Drake Diner
By Jim Duncan
Allison Pohlman is Suzie Glazer-Burt Women’s Basketball Coach at Drake. Around events celebrating the 50th anniversary of women’s basketball at Drake, we asked her to lunch, and she chose Drake Diner.
When Coach walked in, she was greeted by multiple staff on a first-name basis, or as Coach. The mother of triplet girls, Allison exudes a mama bear persona. If you can roll with that analogy, Drake Diner is the sleuth’s den guarded at its entrance by the statue of a Spike, like Cerberus patrolling the threshold of Hades.

Tuesday touts Catering by Cyd has received numerous honors, yet Cyd Koehn's team has found new ways to improve: 1.) The entire staff now has Food Safety and Bar Alcohol certifications from the Iowa Restaurant Association for the State of Iowa; 2.) Everyone has now taken an Equitate and Professional class from Tero International; 3.) They have also graduated from "Look Better Be Better! Bold and Bright" class on colors and stylings.
Looking back at the year in food and hospitality Zeitgeist of the year - flux. Transitions were rife in 2024. Jethro's deserted the Drake area and their mother store for the bright lights of the Iowa Events Center hood. After replacing RC's Diner in 2022, Little Brother closed in Windsor Heights. It was replaced by Blue Agave, half a block from another Mexican cantina and a Puerto Rican cafe. Suman Hoque replaced the venerable Lisa Lavalle at Trellis. Dom Iannarelli left Splash and opened Prime & Providence. Amruth, a superb South Indian cafe, replaced Monterrey on Swanson Road after decades of Mexican restaurants replacing all other kinds of cuisine. Table 128 completed their move from Clive to downtown. Without doing anything, The Station on Ingersoll became a "dive bar," according to something called Geek Nexus at least. A Seven Years Plan by city managers turned Ingersoll into a parking desert — to the degree that some businesses are now forced to pay off duty police to protect their parking lots from being overtaken by customers of other businesses, all of which lost a lot of street parking to the grand design of who? No one wants to be credited with this mess.
