Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“When ‘The Greatest Dog in the World’ (mine) died, I was devastated, and I believe I'm still in the grieving process after many years (Healing, Nov. 11, 2024). We've all heard that time heals all wounds. Well, time is running out!” - James

Man’s best friend, indeed. - Shane

“As a handyman/person, I believe all projects should take about one hour (About an hour, Nov. 12, 2024). The reality is three to five hours without help, unless if you have a smart neighbor. Plus, you have underestimated the need to return to the store/stores two or more times to get the right screws/nuts/bolts or the right piece of wood or paint. It’s never an hour.” - Rex

Thank goodness for adult beverages. And smart neighbors. - Shane

“I’m an enthusiastic daily reader (Edition No. 1,000, Nov. 18, 2024). Don’t stop thinking about tomorrow. (I think I’ve heard that line someplace.)” - Shirley

It will soon be here! I am glad you are reading, Shirley. - Shane

“I recently saw REO Speedwagon, and Kevin Kronin (lead singer) is also 73 (Iron Mike and Space Ace, Nov. 19, 2024). He's still got it! His voice and dance moves were as good as when I saw them in 1984!” - Carol

You likely also thought that “Karate Kid,” “Miami Vice,” Cabbage Patch Kids and a minimum wage of $3.35 per hour were good in 1984. I know I did. - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading. And if you haven’t yet provided feedback on this newsletter at our survey, please do so here. It only takes two or three minutes.

CARS IN THE CITY
Lexus hybrid

By Jackie Wilson

A list of the top 10 luxury brand vehicles includes powerhouses such as BMW, Audi, Jaguar and Lexus. This month’s Cars in the City column features a Lexus hybrid.

The 2024 Lexus RX350 Hybrid Premium offers a 2.5 liter, 4-cylinder hybrid engine. The best thing about a hybrid? It cures “range anxiety.” Drivers don’t need to worry about finding a spot to plug in the car because the battery is charged through regenerative braking. If you’re one who rides the brakes, this might be the perfect car for you. ...

The Simplot plot. Cavendish Farms, Lamb Weston, McCain Foods and the J.R. Simplot Company, which control more than 95% of the market for frozen potato products like french fries, hash browns and tater tots, conspired to artificially fix the prices of their junk foods, according to the antitrust lawsuits filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois this week. The suit alleges the dirt digging four shared trade information and coordinated price raises beginning in 2021, leading  to 47% price increases between July 2022 and this year. (Washington Post)

Turkey tabs. American Farm Bureau Federation reports the average cost of a Thanksgiving meal for 10 is $58.08, a 5% decrease from last year. Turkey accounts for 44% of the total cost of Thanksgiving dinner. Despite highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) contributing to the lowest turkey inventory since 1985, demand for turkey has also decreased 6% less than in 2023 — to an average of $1.68 per pound, bringing the cost of a 16-pound bird to $25.67. Also turkeys are freakishly bigger (average of 30 pounds compared to 18 in 1965) now. Also on Farm Bureau's menu — whole milk prices dropped 14.3% and sweet potatoes 26.2% from last year. However, cubed stuffing mix and dinner rolls are up roughly 8%. While the decline from last year offers small relief to Americans, this year’s meal is still 19% more expensive than it was in 2019.

Grace Lutheran Church celebrates 25 years
A key part of the Adel community

By Lindsey Giardino

Grace Lutheran Church is marking a big milestone — 25 years of being a pillar of faith, service and community in Adel. The celebration offers a chance to look back on the past and embrace the future with hope and vision.

In 1999, the church signed its charter, which is a formal recognition from the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).
The church’s anniversary celebration has been a year-long event, kicking off in January. From new t-shirts and sweatshirts to commemorate the occasion, to acts of service highlighted throughout the year, the celebration has offered numerous ways for the congregation to take part.
