Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“After The Des Moines Register’s untimely poll, I am glad I canceled our subscription three years ago after being a loyal subscriber for 50 years (Smile, Nov. 5, 2024)! Such news tends to discourage a lot of voters who otherwise would have done their patriotic duty and voted — one way or another! - Alan

The last Iowa Poll may have actually motivated more people to get out and vote. Who knows? Keep in mind, Selzer & Company’s Iowa Poll is conducted for The Des Moines Register and Mediacom, not by them. I tend to agree with you that election poll results should not be news, but there is no denying that Ann Selzer and her staff have been remarkably spot on in years past. - Shane

“Thank you for the election day column (Smile, Nov. 5, 2024). I really needed it after all of this year's political lies and half-truths by both political parties. Why do they call the Democrats and GOP ‘parties’? Maybe because they party with our money!” - George

Party on, George! - Shane

“Wow! Thank you for the great voting day column (Smile, Nov. 5, 2024). I remember the poster your sister had. My friend had the small poster in her locker. It always made me smile. Keep on keeping on.” - Donna

Do we have another choice? - Shane

“In 1958, John Naughton of Des Moines designed the Den-Tal-Ez J-Chair after meeting with dentists to understand their needs (Rocking and reclining, Nov. 6, 2024). The chair's split back allowed the patient to lie on their back, which put the dentist in a better position to work on the patient's head. The J-Chair became a standard in the dental profession and the basis for most modern dental chairs. DentalEZ stopped making the J-Chair in 2016 to make room for newer models. The original J-Chair is on display in the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D.C. The dental chair has evolved over time from a simple wooden chair to a high-tech marvel that is more comfortable and helps patients feel involved in the treatment process. Modern dental chairs can adjust the height, angle, lighting and other parameters, and some can even clean teeth using ultrasonic technology.” - Cindy

Suddenly, I want to go the dentist. - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

FILM REVIEW
Papal politics take an unsanctified turn in ‘Conclave’

By David Rowley

“Conclave”
PG | 120 minutes
Director: Edward Berger
Writers: Peter Straughan, Robert Harris
Stars: Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow

A cardinal is seen striding along a Roman highway late at night, his crimson biretta cap clutched tightly in his hand. The clash of this dignified figure against a bleak, modern urban backdrop subtly foreshadows the larger conflict within the story: ancient rituals confronting a rapidly changing world. It’s one of the few glimpses of the cardinals outside. As they close themselves off in the Vatican to elect a new pope, they attempt to shut out the pressures of the modern world — but those pressures remain, permeating every decision they make.

Ranking pizza. Iowa State Auditor Rob Sand was accused of violating a state law that criminalizes “treating voters” to free food or drink. He clarified that this way to Des Moines Register. “I gave hungry voters Little Caesar’s pizza. If I wanted to treat them, I would’ve bought Casey’s.”

Ranking wine towns. Wall Street Journal's chief wine critic Lettie Teague surprised a lot of readers with this proclamation: "When oenophiles I know talk about the great wine cities, they invariably cite London, Paris and New York. But after five days in Vienna in early October, I’m putting that great Austrian city at the very top of my ranking," she declared, citing Vienna’s vineyards, many within the city limits and open for strolling and biking year-round, spectacular views, well-priced wines, and food that was both delicious and generously served.

Can Shack benefits high school bands
Students earn funds by sorting can and bottle donations.

By Jackie Wilson

When you have a recycle bin full of cans and bottles but dread the effort of redeeming them, where else can you take them?
The Can Shack, of course.

The Can Shack is located at the Fareway parking lot at 200 S.E. Laurel in Waukee. Proceeds from the cans benefit both the Waukee and Northwest high school bands.
In past years, the Can Shack has raised more than $13,000 for band students. These funds go toward optional band trips. It helped fund a recent trip to the Rose Bowl parade.

Representatives from both parent band organizations, Sharon Divingnzzo with Waukee Northwest and Pamela Kolli with Waukee, assist with fundraising, as they both have kids in band.
