How many bath towels does a person need? Avid Daily Umbrella reader Rex Post posed this question to me and offered a recent article from Southern Living as fodder. This got me wondering. First, now many bath towels do Jolene and I have? And, second, how many do we really need? The first answer is, more than I care to count. The second answer, according to the Southern Living article, is apparently four to six. In my simple mind, that must mean five, which seems like a lot.
Yes, a clean towel is appreciated. And, yes, it is nice to have plenty to go around when guests are in the house. But, as my friend Nick says, you don’t build a church for the Easter crowd.
Clara Schoen, owner of The Home Organized in Birmingham, Alabama, told Southern Living that people have way too many towels and often have a backlog of them to wash. “I found that the less you have, the more likely (you are) to keep up with it, because you have to,” she said. Good point.
Liz Jenkins, owner of A Fresh Space in Nashville, Tennessee, says less is more. “Ideally, each person should have a minimum of two and a maximum of four to six bath towels,” she shared in the Southern Living story. “Having a clean set and one in the wash makes sense.” OK, but four to six?
Do the rules change for women? Jenkins tells Southern Living, “Many women may want to have two towels on hand — one to dry their body and one for their hair — while most men and children can get away with using one.” Not the same one, though. My kids were grossed out when they figured out we shared the same bar of soap.
What about guests? “If you do tend to have a lot of guests — especially last-minute ones — I think it’s smart to keep one or two extras set aside to make sure you always have some that are clean for them,” Catie Kelly, owner and lead organizer of Sistamatic Organizing in Atlanta, Georgia, told Southern Living.
And how often should towels be washed? Some organizers recommend washing them daily, while others say to use them up to four times. Regardless of how often you wash them, professionals told Southern Living towels need to be hung up with plenty of room to dry.
How about you? How many bath towels do you have, and why? Send me a note and let me know.
Have a wonderful Wednesday, and thanks for reading.

Des Moines has been evolving into the next Halloween Town USA with Zombie Burger, Monsterama Arcade and Pizzeria, and the seasonal Slaughterhouse attraction with its new Haunt speakeasy. (If you know, you know.)
My creative career started with a love of horror films, and it was never about violence. There is more violence in true crime shows that your stay-at-home significant other binge-watches during the week. What I loved about horror films were the wild worlds I would see on screen. | | READ MORE |

Woebegone Wednesday
Government authorities have surveyed the “worrisome problem of homeless people in Japan.” They found as many as 3,000 of them in the country, mostly in Osaka. “If you count people who stay with family or friends without paying rent, the number grows a lot.” An industrial consortium has taken initiative to offer the homeless part time jobs and most gratefully accept. As Douglas MacArthur said 80 years ago, "The Japanese are not like us." (NHK)
Dr. Marty Makari, bestselling author of “Blind Spots,” told Fox Business that America’s main health care "corruption problem" is “taking and prescribing drugs that are not needed.” He said that "children need cooking classes not Ozempic" and that all cancers with rising rates are “caused by eating the wrong foods.” He also reported that 97% of the world's countries will be losing population by 2030.
Restaurateur George Formaro is recuperating from spinal surgery on Monday. He describes it as "life changing" and says he is without back pain for the first time in years.

By Lindsey Giardino
Rickie Richardson loves animals. So, after getting a boxer in 2016, the former Washington state resident found an organization called MustLuvBoxers Rescue — an organization that aims to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome unwanted and abandoned boxers. Richardson got involved as a volunteer and helped transport the dogs, as well as assisted with community events and outreach.
She’s since moved to Johnston but still supports the organization by managing its social media. | | READ MORE |
