“Loved Jim Croce (Telephone songs, Oct. 2, 2024). It's like you put time in a bottle for me this morning. But Sugarloaf? I'm calling that up now, and the video is like the very first YouTube project video!” - Brad
“You know the band performs in the nude. He said, ‘Uh-uh, don’t call us, we'll call you.’ ” - Shane
“Hi, Shane (Telephone songs, Oct. 2, 2024). I did my homework and came up with these: The Clash, ‘London Calling’; Train, ‘Calling All Angels’; Vince Gill, ‘When I Call Your Name’; Carley Rae Jepsen, ‘Call Me Maybe.’ ” - James
Now that’s quite a range of music. - Shane
“Good morning, Shane. I just couldn’t resist dipping into the KFMG music computer to see what telephone tunes WE play (Telephone songs, Oct. 2, 2024). I think you did pretty well. Only missed a couple of significant/popular songs: Sade - ‘Smooth Operator’ and Noah Kahan - ‘Dial Drunk’ (Noah is a popular Alt-Country/Americana performer and was the headliner at this year’s Hinterland Festival.)” - Ron
You are the smooth operator, Ron. - Shane
“I agree with you 100% (Pay it back, Oct. 7, 2024). If an athlete abandons the school that took him/her in, offered a free ride, training, skills discipline, etc., he/she absolutely should pay every cent back if he/she dashes away to another school. But I’d take it a step further. If that athlete chooses not to participate in year-end games in order to protect against injuries before pro level drafts, then once again the deal is off. Staying and participating to the end is just part of the commitment. We forget these are still just kids despite the athletic ability they possess and those types of lessons are a part of learning what life is sometimes about.” - Chuck
Good addition. - Shane
Have a thoughtful Thursday, and thanks for reading.

Pick up your October CITYVIEW magazine, available on racks across the metro. | | FILM REVIEW ‘The Substance’ delivers a campy, bloody romp you won’t soon forget
By David Rowley
“The Substance” R | 141 minutes Director/Writer: Coralie Fargeat Stars: Margaret Qualley, Demi Moore, Dennis Quaid
“The Substance” is not just a horror film — it’s a savage indictment of celebrity culture and the lengths to which society pressures women to maintain an unattainable ideal of beauty. It’s a tragic, funny and deeply disturbing film that will resonate with anyone who has felt the weight of those expectations.
Directed by Coralie Fargeat, the film is a grotesque, satirical journey through themes of fame, beauty, aging and societal pressure, all set in the cutthroat glitz and glamour of Hollywood. It is visually stunning, unnerving and unmistakably unique, destined to polarize audiences and become a cult horror classic. | | READ MORE |

Beaverdale Books will host writer Ta-Nehisi Coates at a ticketed event at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 14 at Franklin Event Center. He will be joined in conversation by Rekha Basu, and there will be a special poetry reading by Iowa City poet Caleb “The Negro Artist” Rainey.
In his new book, “The Message,” the No. 1 New York Times bestselling author of “Between the World and Me” journeys to three resonant sites of conflict to explore how the stories we tell — and the ones we don’t —shape our realities.
Ta-Nehisi Coates originally set out to write a book about writing, in the tradition of Orwell's classic "Politics and the English Language," but found himself grappling with deeper questions about how our stories —our reporting and imaginative narratives and mythmaking — expose and distort our realities. Each ticket holder will receive a copy of his new book, “The Message.”
Tickets are available at: Special Ticketed Event - Beaverdale Books

You are what you don't eat. Dr. Eleanor Barnett wrote “Leftovers: A History of Food Waste and Preservation” and will lecture on that story beginning in the Tudor kitchen, then through medieval streets lined with butchers’ offal, the inventions in preservation during the Industrial Revolution, the hidden history of Victorian street-food scavengers, the thrifty recipes of the World Wars, to the AI restaurants of the future. “Through our leftovers, we learn a lot more about our culture and our shared history, from poverty and inequality to globalization. If we are what we eat, we are equally defined by what we don’t eat.” Watch on Zoom, Saturday, Oct. 12, 10 a.m. Meeting ID: 883 1172 4362. Passcode: 727492. +1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago).

By Rachel Harrington
Did your childhood dream career come true in adulthood? It certainly did for Keri Lindstrom. “When I was in elementary school, I knew I wanted to be an educator in some sense,” she says. “I loved interacting with people.” Her mom worked in education then went into social work, and she observed the impact that a person can have on students in those roles.
