Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“Hi, Shane. You hit my button today (Differences and similarities, Oct. 1, 2024)! Pride — the greatest of all sins — is what divides us. Individuals with their own agendas can seldom ascend to a common goal, and it is in working for a common goal that we achieve something that lasts. One has to set aside personal ambition, personal goals and personal opinions and subject himself or herself by agreeing to unify with others in a greater, common goal. This is not new. Americans berate the country over a lack of unity, which is hilarious actually, only proving we don't know ourselves as people. The entirety of human history is one of conflict, whether in great military wars or in everyday battles over labor, housing, transportation, raw materials or water. The Bible puts this recipe for disaster this way: ‘Every man did what was right in his own eyes.’ It is why there had to be a savior, and it is why he calls people to unify with him, a call that even most people who call themselves Christians cannot abide by — because of their own pride.” - Brad

Amen. - Shane

“Here’s another telephone-centric song: ‘Operator’ by Manhattan Transfer (Telephone songs, Oct. 2, 2024).” - John

Should certainly be on the list. Thank you, John. - Shane

“Hey, Captain Obvious. You missed Stevie Wonder, ‘I Just Called to Say I Love You.’ (Telephone songs, Oct. 2, 2024)” - Irving

Definitely a classic telephone song. Thank you. - Shane

“How about ‘Kiss Me Thru The Phone’ by Soulja Boy (Telephone songs, Oct. 2, 2024)?” - Jimmy

How about not? - Shane

“Hey, Shane. First song that came to mind 'Pennsylvania 6-5000.' It is very much a part of southwest Iowa culture with the Glenn Miller Festival held each June in Clarinda (Telephone songs, Oct. 2, 2024). That song even has its own Wikipedia page. Check out its history.” - Diane

Thanks, Diane. For those who don’t want to follow the link, the telephone number for Hotel Pennsylvania's Cafe Rouge in New York City was Pennsylvania 6-5000. This inspired the Glenn Miller 1940 Top 5 hit of the same name, which had a 12-week chart run. - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

The Iowa Wild ended last season with a 27-37 record and 62 points, second to last in the Central Division, and missed out on the playoffs. This was the first season under head coach Brett McLean, who took over for longtime Wild coach Tim Army. The 62-point season and missed playoff berth is a setback from the season before when the Wild had 76 points and earned a spot in the Calder Cup playoffs before bowing out in the first round.

The Wild showed how good they could be in the back half of the season. After the trade deadline in early March, the Wild went over .500.

“The guys really dug in and stuck to it and really trusted what we were saying, and we played our best hockey at the end of the season,” McLean said.
