“Good morning, Shane. Jesus may return to Earth wearing really pointed cowboy boots to kick some of our butts (Mailbag, Sept. 20, 2024).” - John
John, you might enjoy this book. - Shane
“Hi, Shane. My life changed in February 1964 when The Beatles appeared on ‘The Ed Sullivan Show.’ Since then, I have learned to appreciate many genres of music from classical to punk (Changing musical tastes, Sept. 23, 2024). I’ve also learned how to distinguish talent from non-talent. There are artists who have it, and then there are copiers. I have 1,700-plus combined album, CDs, 45's, cassettes and videos that I have collected over 60 years and have an insurance policy to cover them. I also have them regularly appraised and enjoy finding out what is valuable. I attend many concerts and am amazed how the Des Moines metro brings in the many acts that are virtually unknown and how Iowans attend those shows. Music is the best mind-altering drug ever.” - James
What? No reel to reel? - Shane |

“Interesting musical note. On a recent trip to Wisconsin for a 50th wedding anniversary bash, my bride Celene and I stayed at the Saint Kate in downtown Milwaukee (Changing musical tastes, Sept. 23, 2024). A unique Arts Hotel (their words) with a throwback music touch. After the champagne greeting, we arrived at our room to find a record player with five vintage albums and a ukulele with a song sheet.” - Rex
Did you try to play the ukulele? “Tiny Bubbles,” of course. - Shane
“You covered the costumes from every decade, but you neglected to add the sexy costume list (Halloween costumes, Sept. 24, 2024). Sexy nurse, sexy cop, sexy superhero. The list goes on forever!” - Kevin
Slow down, Kevin. This isn’t a pool hall. - Shane |

“Good morning, Shane. Certain brands of shoes are slide on/slide off, making it easier for my wife and I to manage our shoes policy (Shoes off, Sept. 25, 2024). We leave them in the washing machine room as we come in through the garage. As for you not wanting to scrub the kitchen floor, that's Jolene's job anyway. Just kidding, ladies. I clean the dishes every night, vacuum, dust and even sweep up the hair at Great Clips when I go for a haircut (a story for another time).” - John
Sounds like a clean sweep! I bet the stylists at the salon like you. Jolene? Probably not. - Shane
Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

Featured in the September CITYVIEW magazine. Get your copy soon! October issue arrives next week! | | FEATURE STORY 99 counties
By Jim Duncan
Iowa is divided into 99 parts, called counties. If 99 seems like a lot, it’s not compared to Texas with 254 or Georgia with 257. Even in our own neighborhood, Missouri, Kansas and Illinois all have more.
Why 99? About 183 years ago, sentiment dictated minimum and maximum sizes so that no farmer would be more than a day’s horse ride from his county seat. By 1851, Iowa had been divided into 100 counties conforming to that sentiment. Over the next 21 years, some lost land, others gained, and several names changed, but, in 1872, borders were finalized into the 99 that still comprise and divide the state. | | READ MORE |

Featured in the current issue of Norwalk Living magazine | | New again Residents share their home renovation experiences.
By Rachel Harrington
For many homeowners, the day comes, sooner or later, when they look around their abode and wonder when the carpet was ever stylish, the wall color ever stunning and the layout ever functional. They realize new curtains, throw pillows and artwork won’t be enough to freshen things up, and the only solution to the weary look of their home is to bite the bullet and invest in some major improvements. And, when the work is done, their home — and enthusiasm for it — feels new.
Wide open spaces Nine years ago, dark cherry laminate graced the floor of Ethan and Liz Carpenter’s home, and a small window looked into the garage. There was also a wall dividing the front room and kitchen. The kitchen side of the wall was full of cabinets and included an electric oven/stove. They knew they would improve their house over time. They figured that, once their kids were older, they would open their kitchen into the front room. After much consideration, however, they decided to go ahead and do it. | | READ MORE |

622: Muhammad completes Hegira. On September 27, 622, the prophet Muhammad completes his Hegira, or “flight,” from Mecca to Medina to escape persecution. In Medina, Muhammad set about building the followers of his religion—Islam—into an organized community and Arabian power. The Hegira would later mark the beginning (year 1) of the Muslim calendar. ... READ MORE

1854: Ships collide off Newfoundland, killing about 350. Sudden and heavy fog causes two ships to collide, killing some 350 people off the coast of Newfoundland on September 27, 1854. The Arctic was a luxury ship, built in 1850 to carry passengers across the Atlantic Ocean. It had a wooden hull and could reach speeds of up to 13 knots, an impressive clip at that point in history. On September 20, the Arctic left Liverpool, England, for North America. Seven days later, just off of the Newfoundland coast, it came into a heavy fog. Unfortunately, the ship’s captain, James Luce, did not take the usual safety measures for dealing with fog—he did not slow the Arctic, he did not sound the ship’s horn and he did not add extra watchmen. ...
