Good morning to you!

With Halloween only about a month away, you better start planning your costume now. As most of you know, Halloween get-ups aren’t just for kids anymore. According to CapitalOne Shopping Research, 2023 American spending for Halloween totaled $12.2 billion. If you think candy accounts for the bulk of this, you are wrong. It was just $3.6 billion or about 30% of the total. The research also says the average American had a $108.24 budget for Halloween 2023 supplies, and the average candy budget for 2023 was $31.93.

Back to those costumes. If you plan to attend a Halloween party this year, you know the stress in coming up with ideas. Well, just when you thought you did not have a need for Reader’s Digest, they throw you a bone. The publication website listed out the most popular Halloween costumes by year from 1950 to 2005.

Maybe not surprisingly, in the 1950s, cowboy costumes ruled. John Wayne. Gene Autry. Roy Rogers. You get the idea. Tarzan was popular as well… and Jane.

By the 1960s, Hula Girls, The Beatles and Barbie were all the rage. Mickey Mouse and friends snuck in as well, as did Davy Crockett and Frankenstein. And, of course, Marilyn Monroe. Sonny and Cher made the list, too. So did Rocky and Bullwinkle — and astronauts of any sort.

Elvis, Willy Wonka and Marcia Brady (with the football and broken nose) were hits in the early 1970s, as were Richard Nixon, Charlie’s Angels and Darth Vader. Michael Myers of the original 1978 “Halloween” movie cut things up later in the decade, as did Rocky Balboa and the white leisure suits of John Travolta. But no Fonzie, according to Readers Digest. Seriously.

By the 1980s, Indiana Jones and E.T. were the Halloween costumes of choice, as were Michael Jackson, Madonna and Freddy Krueger. And don’t forget the California Raisin. OK, maybe forget the California Raisin.

The 1990s brought costumes for the Terminator, Barney, Bart Simpson and The Spice Girls. Austin Powers was popular, too, as well as the Ghostface from the “Scream” movies, which I once saw a priest don at a Halloween party.

The 2000s were a new time with some new costume ideas including Britney Spears, Harry Potter, Spider-Man, Captain Jack Sparrow and SpongeBob SquarePants. Not the most exciting, much like the decade.

Bottom line, if you need ideas, you now have a list. Sometimes, the oldies are the goodies. And as my friend Todd says, “If all else fails, you can always pull out the Elvis costume.”

Have a terrific Tuesday, and thanks for reading.

LUNCH WITH...
Charlie Sovich at Manhattan Deli

By Jim Duncan

Charlie Sovich sold Charlie’s Filling Station two years ago after a 48-years-long run. We asked him to lunch and met at Manhattan Deli, where the sandwiches cover all traditional bases while occasionally pinch hitting out of their league, as it did recently with lobster rolls featuring Maine lobster.

Lunch there is reminiscent of walking into a bar like Cheers, “where everybody knows your name.” Our conversation was punctuated with greetings from half a dozen other customers — musicians, beer distributors, entrepreneurs, other bar and restaurant owners, even other writers.

Tuesday Touts
Teo Nguyen's "The Politics of Worthiness" is the most impressionable art show of the year. It evokes yearning, humility and deep sentiments of separation. The artist, son of a great poet, writes titles as brilliant as his paintings, sculpture and short film. Moberg Gallery is its only non-museum visit on a tour from Vietnam to Paris. It plays through Oct. 5 when Teo will speak at the gallery.

Washington Post's Dave McIntyre, my go-to authority for under $30 wines, came out with two new rave reviews of reds: Spanish Goros Monastrell-Syrah 2019 at $19 is a blend of monastrell (the Spanish name for mourvèdre) and syrah with "the flavors of sagebrush, wild mushroom and black pepper,” and Italian Kellerei-Cantina Andrian Rubeno Lagrein 2022, $27. "More savory than fruity, this gorgeous wine seems to channel the spirit of the Italian Alps."

Sorbet grapes are the sweetest tasting white table grapes yet. They are new arrivals at several local stores, on sale today at Fresh Thyme (2900 University Ave., West Des Moines) 3 pounds/$5.99.

New again
Residents share their home renovation experiences.

By Jackie Wilson

For many homeowners, the day comes, sooner or later, when they look around their abode and wonder when the carpet was ever stylish, the wall color ever stunning and the layout ever functional. They realize new curtains, throw pillows and artwork won’t be enough to freshen things up, and the only solution to the weary look of their home is to bite the bullet and invest in some major improvements. And, when the work is done, their home — and enthusiasm for it — feels new.

Basement remodel
When Andy Maurer moved into his home in West Des Moines, the 22-year-old house didn’t have a finished basement. It was a concrete slab, with no drywall.

“It had a cold, grungy feel to it,” he recalls.
He called on Hansen Home Renovations and sought advice on refinishing the basement. He taped areas off to indicate where he wanted walls and various features, including an L-shaped bar. “He (Aaron Hansen) convinced me to change the bar set up for better flow.”
