Good Friday Morning to You!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by subscribers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“How about Herbie the Love Bug and the jalopy from ‘The Beverly Hillbillies’ (Iconic cars from film and TV, April 10, 2023)?” - Rebecca

Weeeelllll, doggies. Now those are some good ones. - Shane

“ ‘Hit The Road Jack’ and ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road’ come to mind (Road songs, April 12, 2023).” - Gail

No more. No more. No more. No more. - Shane

“ ‘The Long and Winding Road’ by The Beatles (Road songs, April 12, 2023).”- Jim

No song list is complete without The Beatles. Thank you, Jim. - Shane

“Your column (Road songs, April 12, 2023) immediately brought two songs to my mind: ‘Route 66’ and ‘Hot Rod Lincoln.’ ” - Chuck

Those are before my time, but they do ring a bell. You have inspired me to give them a listen. Thanks, Chuck. - Shane

“ ‘On the Road Again’ by good old Willie Nelson. I just can’t wait! (Road songs, April 12, 2023).” - Jeri

Oh, yes, making music with my friends. - Shane

“ ‘Turn the Page’ by Bob Seger, on cassette, of course, with the famous line, ‘somewhere on the highway east of Omaha’ (Road songs, April 12, 2023). Off to Sioux City now — if only Buffalo Alice had that pizza buffet on Wednesday. It is very good, and the price is great, so thanks for the suggestion. - Mark

Buffalo Alice. Is that a woman or a man? - Shane

“Good morning, Shane. Nice column (An insignificant age April 17, 2023)! I sneaked up on 56 this past February. I'm enjoying the 50s, but they seem to be going by fast. Do you ever have the thought that this has been a good year, and then — bang — eight weeks later you turn another year older? Have a good day!” - Matt

They do seem to add up more quickly. - Shane

“Don’t forget 73 when you have to start taking out funds due to RMD (Required Minimum Distribution) requirements (An insignificant age April 17, 2023)!” - Chuck

I will add it to my list, Chuck.

Have a fantastic Friday, and thank for reading.

On April 21 ...

2016: Prince dies. On the morning of April 21, 2016, Prince, the polymathic musician who created more than 30 albums and won seven Grammy Awards over a 40-year career, is found dead in Paisley Park, his Minnesota home and recording studio. The cause of death was an accidental overdose of the opioid fentanyl. He was 57 years old.

1989: Tiananmen Square. Six days after the death of Hu Yaobang, the deposed reform-minded leader of the Chinese Communist Party, some 100,000 students gather at Beijing’s Tiananmen Square to commemorate Hu and voice their discontent with China’s authoritative communist government. The next day, an official memorial service for Hu Yaobang was held in Tiananmen’s Great Hall of the People, and student representatives carried a petition to the steps of the Great Hall, demanding to meet with Premier Li Peng. The Chinese government refused such a meeting, leading to a general boycott of Chinese universities across the country and widespread calls for democratic reforms.

1967: 100 millionth. On April 21, 1967, General Motors (GM) celebrates the manufacture of its 100 millionth American-made car. At the time, GM was the world’s largest automaker.

Overcoming fears

Social anxiety

Crissy Northcutt of Norwalk feared public speaking and interactions with others. She experienced what is known as social anxiety, or social phobia, from a young age.

According to Mayo Clinic, social phobia or anxiety in individuals like Crissy relate to a fear of being scrutinized or judged negatively by others as they interact. This fear can cause them to avoid social situations and become disruptive, affecting daily routines.

Unfortunately, this became the case with Crissy. She felt like she could not go out into the world and interact without fear of becoming anxious. Her struggle became debilitating.

“There was a point where I did not even want to leave my house and go out in public because of how extreme the fear was."
