“You don't know me, but I love reading your columns (Cornflower Blue, Sept. 4, 2024)). This one in particular hit close to home as I am a redhead and come from a long line of redheads. I remember my mother coloring her hair right up until she was 86 and went to memory care. Not only did she color her hair, she colored my father’s until he passed away. Thank you for your funny yet informational stories. Have a great week. I look forward to what you write next.” - Patti
Did your mother go with Ruby Red? Or Wine Red? Or Rust? So many options. - Shane
“Shane, thanks to you, I now know more about belly buttons than I ever imagined (Belly buttons, Sept. 9, 2024). I know that, medically, they represent where the umbilical cord was attached to each of us, but I once heard a Christian comedian speculate that, when God created Adam, he looked at that huge expanse of navel and, with his finger, went ‘Cootchie!’ And that's how they were created. He also said that the reason God created belly buttons was so that you'd have some place to hold the salt when you eat celery in bed. I haven't tried that.” - Bob
I will never look at a salt shaker the same way again. - Shane
“Good morning Shane. Regarding your comment about Jesus wearing sandals, I guess his mom never took him to Thom Mcan or Buster Brown for his shoes, but he did wear a primitive version of wing tips (Mailbag, Sept. 12, 2024). Have a great weekend.” - John
The question is, what will he be wearing when he returns? - Shane
“Hello, Shane. I love reading your newsletter. I just wanted you to know how much I appreciate and recognize the effort it takes to write a newsletter. I do it once a month and it seems like the next month’s article is due every day. Thank you for what you do.” - Maureen
Thank you, Maureen. I guess it is called work for a reason, but I enjoy every minute, and I am glad you do, too. - Shane
“Listening is an underrated skill (Listen, Sept. 17, 2024). My grandfather was more direct when I was a boy and prattling on about something. He'd say, ‘Boy, God gave you two ears and one mouth. You figure it out.’ Also, the difference between listening and hearing has become a challenge. Thanks for the diversity of your weekday words. I hear you.” - John
I think I would have liked your grandfather. - Shane
I see that your annual Wine & Whiskey Walk at West Glen Town Center is tonight. I am thinking about going. Is it any fun?” - Julie
Well, Julie, I am not sure how you define fun, but if sampling various whiskey drinks and wines at a variety of fun establishments in some fantastic weather is your kind of thing, then you will have a blast. Be sure to buy your discounted tickets before 3 p.m. today at https://whiskeywalk.dmcityview.com. I hope to see you there. - Shane
Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

Featured in this month's CITYVIEW magazine | | YOUR NEIGHBORS Iowa League of Heroes turns children’s dreams into reality
By Cyote Williams
The rise in popularity of superheroes in the last 20 years has been difficult to ignore. Lists featuring the highest-grossing movies of that time heavily featured Marvel and DC movies and their respective characters. Children especially idolize these superheroes.
While these heroes have worlds to save and crimes to stop, they still make time for children who could use cheering up. Matt Morgan of the Iowa League of Heroes (ILH) plays an integral part in connecting those kids with their favorite heroes. | | READ MORE |

When pigs fly. This year’s IgNobel Prize went to a combined Japanese and American research team working out of two Japanese universities. Their discovery, in non-medical terminology, was that mammals (pigs anyway) can breathe through their anuses. This is important because it suggests an inexpensive alternative to ventilation in hospitals, particularly for coma patients. (Newsroom Tokyo)
Cheese Bar's next wine and cheese dinner features Domaine du Prieure wines from Bourgogne (Burgundy, but the French have asked American wine writers to not use that translation anymore). This is going to be more lavish than typical dinners with courses of: pork and parsley terrine; roasted leek, artichoke and snail croquettes; beef Bourgogne en croute (in suet pastry); bacon wrapped tenderloin with caramelized celeriac puree, tomato gastrique and brandied tomatoes; and pain d’espices with two sweetened butters. $150 per person with wines and a cocktail. 515-277-7828 to reserve.

Featured in the current issue of Adel Living magazine | | Meet Courtney Arnold Adel grad teaches the next generation.
By Ashley Rullestad
Courtney Arnold attended ADM Community School District, where her love of learning started — and it has never stopped. She graduated in 2019 from ADM High School and attended Iowa State University where she earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education with endorsements in reading and English language arts.
This fall, she will be starting her second year of teaching and her second year at ADM, now as a kindergarten teacher at Adel Elementary. “I honestly feel like education chose me. Growing up, I loved being at school and loved my teachers. I would play school in my room with my imaginary students. I still, to this day, can remember how my teachers made me feel loved and cared for, and I always knew I wanted to do the same for my own students. Education is where I'm meant to be.” | | READ MORE |
