“Shane, reading comments from an Ad Man about advertising is entertaining (Receipts, Aug. 26, 2024). Coupons on the back of receipts get virtually no response in this household. To cut one out of a receipt ruins the receipt. I doubt the IRS would find that good.”- Chuck
Amazingly, the ink on the ads doesn’t seem to disappear. - Shane |

“I read the Daily Umbrella and saw the comment about Warren Buffett’s billfold (Friday mailbag, Sept. 6, 2024). I had my hands on it when the ISU finance club met with him when I was president of that club circa 2004. After the photo, he took the billfold back.” - Carrie
When I was a kid, I saw that my uncle had a $100 bill. I asked him if I could put it in my pocket, as I never had a $100 bill in my pocket before. He agreed, and I did just that but carefully swapped it with a $1 bill I had in there and handed that back to him. My uncle didn’t even look at the dollar bill but just hand-motioned me to give the $100 bill back. And, like you, I did. - Shane |

“I loved your observations in today’s column (A passion for football, Sept. 10, 2024). Saturday was a surprise but had pluses on both sides. ISU won, and one of the stars who made it happen was a Bettendorf High School graduate (Darien Porter). The Quad-cities-area Hawks took great pride in that.” - Kay
Took great pride? Or swallowed great pride? Maybe both. Regardless, it was a great football game. - Shane
Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

Featured in the SEPTEMBER issue of CITYVIEW | | FOOD DUDE Aposto — the fruit of deep roots
By Jim Duncan
When the millennium was new, Tony Lemmo opened his first café in the Metro Market. That brilliant incubator of food businesses was doomed by its limitations — mainly that it could only be open on weekends.
Lemmo saw the writing on the wall and started looking for a more permanent place to grow. He discovered a dilapidated house in Sherman Hill, a few blocks east on Woodland. It had previously housed Le Chat Noir, Walter Jahncke’s Victorian coffee experience with exquisite pastries and a wrap-around front porch. | | READ MORE |

Feed the bats, save the real mezcal. In the September issue of Smithsonian, Jay Cheshes explains how the new popularity of mezcal (700 % growth in demand 2011-21) has threatened to end the artisan spirit. Three things stuck out to this old palenque-hopper: 1.) Bats have propagated agave for centuries but the American lust for mezcal led to growers harvesting the plants before they flower. That deprives bats of a reason to hang around, endangering the existence of mezcal agave as it has been for thousands of years. 2.) Just as with tequila, mezcal agave planters have doubled down on just one varietal. That is reckless in an era of hotter climates, viruses and blights. Did no one pay attention to the Irish potato famine? 3.) It’s important to buy “bat friendly” tequilas and mezcals. (There are six mezcals and five tequilas signed on.) Plantations must hold back a mere 5% of their agave for flowering and thus feeding the pollinators who give the plants and the industry a chance to survive without massive injections of herbicides and insecticides.

Featured in the current issue of Johnston Living magazine | | NEW AGAIN Residents share their home renovation experiences. By Ashley Rullestad For many homeowners, the day comes, sooner or later, when they look around their abode and wonder when the carpet was ever stylish, the wall color ever stunning and the layout ever functional. They realize new curtains, throw pillows and artwork won’t be enough to freshen things up, and the only solution to the weary look of their home is to bite the bullet and invest in some major improvements. And, when the work is done, their home — and enthusiasm for it — feels new.
Main floor elegance Matt and Nancy Brown moved into their house nine years ago. Immediately, they knew some things needed to change.
“The house was very outdated and had not been changed since it was built in 1995,” Nancy says. “The overall layout of the home was good, and the structure was great, and the land is amazing.” | | READ MORE |
