Navels. Umbilici. Innies. Outies. Dust collectors. Our belly buttons have a lot of names, but how much do we really know about them?
Most of us recognize that our belly buttons are protruding, flat or hollowed areas on our abdomens where an umbilical cord was attached. They are incredible, visible reminders of our connections with our mothers. What we may not know is that our belly buttons are basically scars on our abdomens and are unique to each of us because, well, they are scars. Even so, various forms of belly buttons have been classified by medical experts under the two main categories most of us are familiar with.
Outies A belly button with an umbilical tip protruding past the skin is an outie. In other words, an outie is any belly button that is not concave. Do you have an outie? If so, which one of these? • A spiral outie is rare and occurs when the umbilical cord scar forms a swirl shape. • A split outie happens when the protruding umbilical cord scar extends outward but is cleft in two by a fissure that extends part or all the way through the umbilical cord scar, similar in appearance to a coffee bean. • A protrusion outie has an umbilical cord remnant that is completely revealed, exposing the full umbilical scar. • A circlet outie is when the fissure is contained centrally and does not extend past the umbilical cord remnant in any direction, forming a donut shape.
Innies A belly button with an umbilical tip that does not protrude past the skin is an innie. It is concave. Got an innie? Which one? • A round belly button innie is completely circular with no hooding. • A vertical belly button innie is in a more elongated hollow parallel form. • An oval belly button innie form has either superior hooding, inferior hooding or no hooding. • A T-shaped belly button innie looks like a T and may have superior hooding. • A horizontal belly button innie is the least visible scar, as the natural lines of the tendinous intersection fold over the scar.
If you are not looking at your belly button right now, or asking someone else to do so, you will be soon. Thank your mother.
Have a marvelous Monday, and thanks for reading.

Featured in the SEPTEMBER issue of CITYVIEW | | FEATURE STORY 99 counties
By Jim Duncan
More than 180 years ago, sentiment dictated county sizes so that no farmer would be more than a day’s trip from his county seat. In 1851, all of Iowa had been divided into 100 counties conforming to that sentiment. For the next 21 years, some lost land, others gained, and several names changed. In 1872, borders were finalized into the 99 that still comprise and divide the state. | | READ MORE |

Rice shortages in Japan? Tokyo is experiencing serious rice shortages. Many Tokyo markets are sold out. The chief causes are interesting: 1.) Hoarders are anticipating typhoon season shortages more than they used to. 2.) Last year’s crop was down 20% because of hot temperatures, and this year’s excellent harvest is still a month away. 3.) Tourists, up nearly 25% this year over last, are eating too much sushi. 4.) More Japanese rice, deemed superior for sushi, is being exported mainly to America and South Korea. 5.) Wheat (pizza and pasta) is far more expensive after Russia invaded chief exporter Ukraine, so people are turning to rice. (Newsroom Tokyo)
Iowa Restaurant Association (IRA) hosts an open PAC fundraiser tomorrow (September 10) at Templeton Distillery. (IRA uses PAC funds to lobby against stupid government power plays like the U.S. Department of Labor raiding Iowa, and only Iowa, mom & pop restaurants and leveling crippling fines over discrepancies between Iowa and federal labor laws.) The afternoon will feature an exclusive tour of the whiskey facilities, including samples of Templeton spirits. After the tour there will be dinner at Wasted Grain in Carroll at 6:30.

Featured in the current issue of Clive Living magazine | | WHAT'S THE BUZZ? Residents share their experiences as beekeepers.
By Sean Dengler
Passion for beekeeping Finding one’s way into beekeeping can take many different paths. This passion for taking care of one of nature’s smallest creatures can develop in diverse ways. For Rosalie Pfeifer, it took reading about the decline of bees.
“I became interested in beekeeping in 2010 from articles I had read on the decline of the bee population and that bees and pollinators are responsible for one of three foods we eat,” she says. “At that time, we lived in Waukee, and there was an ordinance prohibiting beekeeping. In the meantime, I read and studied articles, stories, books about honeybees and their extraordinary behaviors. I was hooked.”
