Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“Your reference to a thick billfold reminds me of Warren Buffett (Receipts, Aug. 26, 2024). At a public event, Buffett was asked to pose for a picture with some construction union leaders. He pulled this really thick, worn, leather billfold out of his pocket, and suggested the union president hold it with him so he could tell people he got in Warren Buffett's pocket. Was a cute idea. The thickness of Buffett's billfold made my back hurt just thinking about sitting on it. Couldn't tell for sure what all he had in it, but it didn't look like currency. I use a small credit card case with a driver's license window slot and a pocket for my insurance cards. Fits in my front pants pocket nicely. If I am keeping a receipt at point of purchase, it goes in my pocket until I get home.” - Chuck

That sounds like a great idea, until those receipts go through the washer and the dryer and turn into a paper marble. - Shane

“Shane, thanks for the awesome column (A salute to working Americans, Sept. 2, 2024)! On a sad note, my son is in the law enforcement field and was asked to sit in on some new employee interviews. Three out of 10 people interviewed were asked what the most important aspect of the job was for them, and they answered either ‘Do I have to work weekends?’ or ‘How much time do I get off a year?’ Sadly, there is a very high turnover rate in his job.” - James

Hiring full-time workers has never been an easy task, but it has certainly become more challenging. - Shane

“I found your column on hair color to be interesting in that it appears each color noun now requires an adjective to modify it (Cornflower Blue, Sept. 4, 2024). Just saying blonde isn't enough anymore. Kind of like paint colors, I suppose. I always said I'd rather have my hair turn gray rather than fall out. Apparently, it's going to do both.” - Bob

I believe that is Diminishing Silver. - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

Freaky Friday
What were they thinking? Alina Wang, Travel and Personal Finances chief for Cheapism, released her “Weirdest fast-food commercials of all time.” Burger King’s series of a very creepy king mascot spying on people’s bedrooms was No. 1. Coming in second through fifth were: Taco Bell’s "Psychedelic Chihuahua" of 2009; McDonald's "Mac Tonight" featuring a moon-headed crooner played by a mime artist; Quiznos' “Spongmonkeys"; and Little Caesar's "Crazy Dippers" with a man named Bruce who "loves to dip things" doing that obsessively. For our money, Burger King’s 34-day time lapse montage of a Whopper turning moldy should have won. It was meant to point out that the sandwich was “preservative-free," but what most people took away is that the Whopper can turn ugly and unappetizing.

Holy longhorn, Texas football is going vegan? The days of simple stadium food are gone with the west Texas wind, even in Dallas. Today pro teams unroll their new foods each season like the Iowa State Fair. The Dallas Cowboys, the epitome of red meat America, have conceded to modern times, with an asterisk. Acknowledging that their best seller every year since 1999 has been the cheese steak, AT&T Stadium Concessions Chef Heather Fuller announced that this year there will be a vegan version of the sandwich, plus vegan hot dogs, vegan nachos and vegan pulled pork. They will be sold only in sections 410 and 411 on the upper level of the giant stadium.

WHAT'S THE BUZZ?
Residents share their experiences as beekeepers.

By Joe Baumgarten

Family welcomes backyard hive
Buddy Cramer and his 7-year-old son, Sawyer, are on the hunt. They have just returned from vacation, and Cramer is eager to see if his "nucleus" hive has produced a queen yet. The two of them get suited up, fire up the smoker and proceed to open up the small hive he keeps in his backyard.

“Last year, I had a bad attack of verroa mites,” he says. “They wiped out all five of my colonies last fall, so I had to start over. I split this hive from one of my other hives on July 6, so she should be in there and laying eggs by now.”

Cramer has been interested in bees and beekeeping since he learned about them in grade school. He expressed a nervous interest in beekeeping to his wife one day. The source of his anxiety?

“I'm allergic to bees," he shares with a laugh.
