Good morning to you!

I wrote a column last year in honor of Labor Day, and I updated it this year as an ongoing salute to working Americans who fuel our country’s economic engine.

I salute working Americans who take pride and satisfaction in a full day’s work, recognizing that anything less than 40 hours per week is a part-time job.

I salute working Americans who appreciate the satisfaction in feeling tired at the end of the day.

I salute working Americans who understand every company needs customers, and that those folks are the real bosses.

I salute working Americans who know work is not about sabbatical programs, wellness days or having birthdays off.

I salute working Americans who realize success does not come from bean bags and ping pong tables but rather lots of sweat and determination.

I salute working Americans who show up on time — or early — every single day.

I salute working Americans who understand 20% of any job is going to be awful, regardless of where they are working.

I salute working Americans who choose to spend their hard-earned money locally on American-made products.

I salute working Americans who understand mastering any task truly takes 10,000 hours and are willing to invest that time to become experts.

I salute working Americans who leave politics at home and focus on their employment tasks.

I salute working Americans who appreciate an adult beverage once the work is done — but not before.

And finally, I salute now-retired Americans who spent their lifetimes doing all the things listed above while working to better themselves, their families, their co-workers, the companies they worked for and the United States of America.

Have a leisurely Labor Day, and thanks for reading.

A good trend for Uber but a bad thing for parents and restaurants (Wall Street Journal)
1.) The number, and percentage, of 19-year-olds who have a driver’s license has dropped nearly 20% since peaking in 1983.
2.) The number of 16- to 23-year-olds who have recently taken, or plan to take, a road trip is down 24% in the last year alone.
3.) Loss of interest in driving is partially explained by: the emergence of Uber and its ilk; higher rates that young drivers pay for auto insurance; and inflation.
4.) Parents  say they are becoming chauffeurs for adult children.

Wallace House's Victorian High Tea events have been so popular they have been extended into autumn. Oct. 23 and Nov. 20 are up for reservations.

Meet Angela Mills
Teaching about inclusion and acceptance

By Ashley Rullestad

Angela Mills came to Urbandale schools 12 years ago.

“Once my son started kindergarten, I began volunteering in his classroom, and I loved it,” she says. “I really enjoyed being around the kids and helping them, so I applied to be a sub associate and got hired on part time, eventually becoming a full-time behavior tech. I worked with such a great team at Karen Acres, and one teacher in particular, Deb Kadoun, talked me into going back and getting my teaching degree.”

Mills decided to continue working and attend UNI to get her education degree. Now she works at Webster Elementary as a special education teacher. This next year, Mills will teach reading, writing and math for K-5 adaptive and mild to moderate behavior students.
