“Have never thought of ‘fun’ places on a state-by-state comparison (Most fun states, Aug. 21, 2024). I can think of many places — cities, national parks, miscellaneous attractions, etc. — that were fun to visit and I would go back given the chance. Whole states? No. Perhaps Dr. Seuss has me pegged and I don't know how to have fun.” - Chuck

“Hi, Shane. After reading about your frustration with the length of receipts, I just had to share these photos with you (Receipts, Aug. 26, 2024). Last month, my husband and I received an unsolicited invitation in the mail to apply for an American Express platinum card. The page (more like a scroll!) of fine print we were supposed to read was unbelievable: a yard long AND double-sided! I took a photo of each side while my husband held up a yardstick for comparison. Seriously. Who has the time or patience to wade through all that?” - Carolyn |

Oh, my. That’s almost as long as the privacy statements from the Big Tech social media sites on how they use your personal data. - Shane
“Recurring calendar events do the trick for me (Furnace filter reminder, Aug. 27, 2024). Replace HVAC filter. Clean washing machine. Clean dishwasher filter. Pour drain clog preventer. Alexa/Google reminders also for meds. Nothing magical.” - Josie
You are a task master, Josie. And I appreciate the advice. - Shane
Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

Featured in the August issue of CITYVIEW | | JOE'S NEIGHBORHOOD A pedestal for a good cop
By Joe Weeg
“I’m not gonna do that,” the Des Moines police officer says from the middle of the classroom. I fix him with a cold smile.
“Listen, that’s the law for a police stop of a car.”
I say this more defensively than I’d like because, of course, in this room full of cops I’m just considered another know-it-all lawyer who sits safely in his office every day.
“I don’t care, it’s too dangerous. It’s unrealistic. I’m not going to do it,” the cop says as he crosses his thick arms and frowns. | | READ MORE |

Temple Grandin is a world-renowned authority on both autism and animal welfare. (She persuaded McDonald's that animal welfare was important for them, and they demanded it of the producers of their meat.) Here are some things she said speaking in Des Moines Saturday: "Food rescue programs in schools are making people sick - they are rescuing bad food." "If a cow is too lame to walk up the (slaughterhouse) ramp, the solution is not to redesign the ramp." "20 years ago there were no cows with heart disease coming through the meat packers. Now 8% have congestive heart failure and most of those are Angus. They breed with the same sires over and over. So, the problem is genetic." "We will pay a terrible price for dropping shop classes in public schools. Without that kind of hands-on teaching, kids will not learn how things work. Then we'll have a generation with no problem solvers." "Most all instruction manuals are too vague. That is what scares me about AI. Whoever programs the AI will be too vague so that anything will likely be misinterpreted."
South Asian cuisine moves north in metro Des Moines. Red Chillez Indian Cuisine opened recently in Ankeny's Kohl's Plaza, by Hobby Town. They promise "best in the world chefs" and "the freshest ingredients." They have three baby corn dishes on the menu in addition to the typical South Indian menu covering Andrah Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Goa specialties, using chicken, goat, lamb and fish.

Urbandale Living magazine | | WHAT'S THE BUZZ? Residents share their experiences as beekeepers.
By Joe Baumgarten
While the Iowa DNR reports the number of native bees in Iowa continues to decline, more and more apiarists (beekeepers) are emerging to nurture the bee population. As of Jan. 1 of last year, Iowa boasted 36,000 bee colonies for operations with five or more colonies, according to the USDA. That’s a big uptick from the prior year’s 26,000 colonies and the 15,500 colonies the year before that. But who are these beekeepers, and what drives their passion? Some local apiarists share their stories.
From mentee to mentor
Doyle Kincy has been passionate about beekeeping since he was a young boy helping his grandfather. That passion came full-circle when Doyle mentored his grandson, Cody, with his first hive. He has slowed down considerably these days, but at the height of his involvement, he was working more than 30 hives and producing enough honey to supply the local Hy-Vee stores. For the last 10 years, he has also been passionate about mentoring others, sharing his love and knowledge of the fine art of keeping bees.
