“Young people will never have a sore index finger from dialing a rotary phone, the experiences of talking to directory assistance or an operator, long distance phone charges, party lines, the sounds of the coins clinking in the pay phone, a pay phone, a bank of pay phones, a home visit from the telephone repair man, a collect call (unless they're incarcerated), the transition from long tangling cords of wall mounted phones to long antenna wireless phones, or the princess phone (Burning your butt on a metal slide, July 23, 2024). “I don’t know how it was in your house, but in our house the youngest was charged with changing the channel for Daddy (Burning your butt on a metal slide, July 23, 2024). I had to do it for two or three years, until my sister grew up enough to change the channel, and then it became the task of the youngest who could actually do the job. Except for when all the younger children were in bed and it became my job again.” - Donna
Oh, yes. The human remote control. In my childhood home, that sometimes meant using a pliers because the plastic channel knob was broken. Fortunately, I could count all the available channels on one hand. - Shane

Complex crazy

Since 2021, several Des Moines suburbs have opened massive, multi-million-dollar, multi-use sports complexes. In West Des Moines, development costs for the MidAmerican Energy RecPlex were close to $60 million in 2021, according to the Business Record. Waukee launched Triumph Park in cooperation with Confluence and received positive shoutouts from Apple CEO Tim Cook in 2022. In 2023, two more suburbs opened their sports complexes. The development costs for GrimesPlex in Grimes, which was initially a private venture that became a public one, and the Gregg Young Sports Campus in Norwalk were both upwards of $30 million.

Food tourism. To justify reports that Florida had paid expenses for Michelin to create a food guide to the state, Florida's tourism department announced that Tampa brought in $1.09 billion in food spending last year, Orlando $7.33 billion, and Miami $4.88 billion, and that tourism accounted for much of that. Iowa has a lot of food draws but does little to promote them.
Wednesday was Day of the Ox in Japan. It is traditional to eat eel then to celebrate the midsummer. Baby eel is making a comeback in both Japan and Spain — its two most adoring countries.
Over halfway to New Years news. The Doo Wop Project, six Broadway vocalists, has signed to join Des Moines Symphony Pops for New Years Eve this year. Their promo says they range "from Frankie Valli, The Drifters and The Four Seasons to re-imagined favorites by Michael Jackson, Jason Mraz and Maroon 5."
Weekend deals. Warren County Fair in Indianola hosts Shenandoah and Confederate Railroad on Friday plus Demolition Derby on Saturday... Fish Fry Friday night specials can be found at Machine Shed (11151 Hickman Road, Urbandale), Red Lobster (3838 Westown Parkway, West Des Moines) and Cracker Barrel (11701 University, Clive)... Friday is paella night at Purveyor (505 E. Grand Ave., Des Moines). It is special paella, too... Brenda Trang has extended her fabulous Friday buffets to every Friday at Vietnam Cafe (Merle Hay Mall Food Court) 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. - $16.95. Brenda is a civic treasure, and traffic is slow in the mall... Bawarchi (6630 Mills Civic Parkway, West Des Moines) has Friday - Sunday specials on paneer kebabs, chicken curry and goat curry... Mickey's in Yale (217 Main St., Yale) has hot beef sandwich lunches and all you can eat fish dinner specials today... Chicago Speakeasy (1520 Euclid Ave., Des Moines) offers BBQ beef and marinated roast beef sandwiches on special for Friday lunch... 801 Chophouse (801 Grand Ave., Des Moines) has Sunday supper specials that deliver deep discounts on filet, prime rib and red king salmon dinners... Tito’s Lounge (3916 N.W. Urbandale Drive, Urbandale) now has brunch on Fridays... Aldi stores are selling avocados for 65 cents and cantaloupes for $1.99 through Tuesday... Court Avenue Brewing Company (309 Court Ave., Des Moines) hosts Saturday and Sunday breakfast buffets for $23.99... Today is Summer Stir, East Village's No. 1 traveling cocktail party. Ten specialty drinks from six lounges $25 ordered in advance here.

A beautiful setting for life — and a wedding
As Susie Kamm and her husband, Steve, stared out into what was then an empty field in Bondurant in 1995, imagining what their future place of residence would look like, little did they know that, nearly 30 years later, this would be the spot they would still call home.
This place, where thousands of memories have been made across the years, is something special to them. And it’s been treated thusly, right down to field stones and boulders that dot the 1-acre plot of land, the decades-old lilacs given to Susie by her grandmother, and the numerous varieties or flora that give the spot such colorful life.
