Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

Shane, I love reading about your upbringing. It is so similar to mine! I chuckled when you mentioned getting your permit and driving home with your mom (Birthday memories, Aug. 19, 2024). I remember my first time driving (in a church parking lot) with my mom (my dad did not have the patience - lol). I was grinning ear to ear as I drove around the lot until I looked over at my mom, who had an expression of panic. I asked her what was wrong and apparently, I had been driving within whiskers of every parked car in the lot. After that I made sure I had plenty of room between me and the other cars. Ha!” - Kevin

I have been told that cemeteries are great places to learn to drive, as you can’t kill anyone there. - Shane

“Happy birthday, Shane, and congratulations on another successful trip around the sun. My favorite birthday was in 1980 when I turned 27 (Birthday memories, Aug. 19, 2024). My church's singles' group planned a potluck after the Sunday morning service. I was asked to provide a dessert, so I decided to bake a cake for the group. But my best friend from college and his wife invited me to spend my birthday weekend with them. So, I contacted the organizer of the potluck to let her know I wouldn't be able to attend, but I would still fulfill my promise to provide a cake. There was silence before she admitted that the potluck was a cover story for what was really a surprise birthday party for me, and the group was laughing at the fact that I was providing the cake for my own birthday. As it turns out, my college friend and his wife drove me from Stuart to Indianola to attend church and the potluck/birthday party with me.” - Bob

So you had your cake and ate it, too? - Shane

“Good morning (Our first home, Aug. 20, 2024). Twenty years ago, as my wife stood in the hall looking at the empty bedrooms where we had created our family, the rooms our daughters grew up in, I put my hands on her shoulders and told her, ‘It's just a house; you made it a home.’ With that, we headed for our new home in Ankeny. Thanks for the memories.” - John

Stated perfectly, John. Thank you. - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

Fairy tales are supposed to teach us things. Sometimes trite truisms like not telling lies, other times the tales are meant more as a warning, a call to trust your instincts, to know that not everyone is who they say they are. ...

What’s the buzz?
Residents share their experiences as beekeepers.

By Ashley Rullestad

While the Iowa DNR reports the number of native bees in Iowa continues to decline, more and more apiarists (beekeepers) are emerging to nurture the bee population. As of Jan. 1 of last year, Iowa boasted 36,000 bee colonies for operations with five or more colonies, according to the USDA. That’s a big uptick from the prior year’s 26,000 colonies and the 15,500 colonies the year before that. But who are these beekeepers, and what drives their passion? Some local apiarists share their stories.

Buzzy hobby
Emily Carrington has been attracted to bees for a long time, but what motivated her to start beekeeping was sending her youngest child to kindergarten.

“It was a new chapter in my life of no longer having my little ones as physically dependent on me, which meant I had this new opportunity to focus on something I could be passionate about that was separate from being a mom, wife and business owner,” she says.
