Good morning to you!

Welcome to an extra edition of the mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“My dad was a carpenter (Dad jokes, Aug. 7, 2024). His first joke was, ‘Did you hear the one about the blind carpenter? He picked up his hammer and saw.’ His other one was more for anyone:

‘One bright day in the middle of the night,
Two dead men got up to fight,
Back to back they faced each other,
Drew their swords and shot each other,
If you don’t believe this lie is true,
Ask the blind man he saw it, too.’

Took me all day to remember that one. Thanks again for the memories. - Donna

Maybe your dad needed to see an eye doctor? - Shane

“Shane, did your dad ever have you near him when he was hammering nails into something and throw down a nail and say, ‘Dang it, another nail with the head on the wrong end?’ (Dad jokes, Aug. 7, 2024). Yeah, mine neither.” - James

Some variation of that, but when he got those efforts right, he would say, “We are cooking with fuel now!” - Shane

“Good morning, Shane. The brief ban on plastic bags we experienced here in Iowa didn't last long (I love a parade, Aug. 8, 2024). Bringing your own bags was a real pain for we lazy people and some say unhealthy due to contamination. Unprepared in Philadelphia a while ago, we had to buy a grocery bag. You mentioned the waste of plastic bags each year. Did you ever consider how many little plastic cups and plastic forks are wasted in stores serving samples of foods and drinks?” - John

Good points, John, but the littering of those plastic bags stuck in tree branches are what irritate me the most. - Shane

Have a thoughtful Thursday, and thanks for reading.

ART NEWS
Growing up in summer

By Jim Duncan

In the art world, summer is the season of aestivation. That started before air conditioning when art patrons and performers retreated from sultry cities for cooler climes. It persists as a time out for symphonies, opera companies, schools and ballets. Douglas Duncan and Lawrence Ely took advantage of that a half century ago by establishing a summer opera company here that commands far-flung attention that might not be there when other companies are fully active. Des Moines Metro Opera’s recently concluded season was its best yet.

Bad August for restaurants courtesy of the U.S. Senate. The U.S. Senate failed to advance the Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act, H.R. 7024, which was passed by the U.S. House on a bipartisan vote. That means that current eligibility for 100% bonus depreciation on leasehold and interior improvements for restaurants will reduce to 20% this year and end completely after 2026.

Stanford wins big. Stanford students/grads took home 39 Olympic medals, more than double the number of any other U.S. school and more than the Netherlands, South Korea, Germany or Canada. In addition to Stanford, other colleges with multiple medals were led by Texas, Cal, Virginia, Penn State, Southern Cal, Washington, Notre Dame, UCLA, Florida, Iowa, Davidson and Harvard.  (WSJ)

Fratianni has love for books and giving back.

By Lindsey Giardino

Mary Fratianni moved to West Des Moines 24 years ago.

In the years since, she’s developed a real affinity for the community. So much so that, in 2020, she joined the board of the West Des Moines Library Friends Foundation, which helps to guide and support the library in terms of events, fundraising, membership, endowment and technology. The group’s mission is to provide support and serve as advocates for the library.

One of the foundation’s most visible recent projects was helping fund the Words on Wheels mobile library.
