“Stop and smell the roses — no thank you (Bee stings, July 29, 2024). The first and last time I did this (age 8), I got stung on the nose. Found out I was allergic to bee venom and how large my nose could grow. Haven’t smelled any roses since, unless they are ‘floristed.’ ” - Diane
I am with you. - Shane
“Hi, Shane. My best concert? No contest (Concerts, July 30, 2024). November 1969, Oakland, California. Headliner: The Rolling Stones. Opening acts: The Ike and Tina Turner Revue and B.B. King. Second place is a county fair in northern California with Santana on the stage. Those were the days, brother.” - John
Music has certainly changed, but those bands are iconic. - Shane
“Hi, Shane. My first concert was seeing The Beatles in Chicago in 1966 when I was only 5 years old (Concerts, July 30, 2024). My mom and six of my eight older siblings took the train from Burlington to sit in miserable seats in the balcony. We couldn’t see Ringo and could barely hear the music over the screaming teenage girls. But, hey, it was The Beatles, so that was pretty cool. The best concert is hard to decide between Boston, Huey Lewis, Styx and Cheryl Crow. The worst? Rick Springfield (with Greg Kihn as the warm-up band) — the things we do for our college girlfriends.” - Tim
And for our wives. Did I mention I saw Pentatonix? Not exactly The Beatles. Sigh. - Shane
“Hi, Shane. I could go on and on with this subject, as I have been a concert-goer for 56 years (Concerts, July 30, 2024). I have a hard time determining the best and worst, but two that come to mind first are Emerson, Lake & Palmer at Vets Auditorium when they had a 70-piece orchestra and a quadriphonic sound system. The best to this day. Then there was Sly & The Family Stone at the Iowa State Fieldhouse who played about 30 minutes and two songs. He was so stoned, the rest of the band walked out on him. I have seen many bands in small venues that were amazing, and most people would not know who they are. I have given presentations about my concert experiences and have written a book about them. There’s nothing better for an attitude adjustment than a good concert.” - James
I had to look up what a quadriphonic sound system is. I love it. You are a book of concert knowledge — or maybe an album of concert knowledge. - Shane
Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

Found in the August issue of CITYVIEW | | FEATURE STORY CITYVIEW’s 2024 Ultimate Place for Lunch
By Jim Duncan
It goes by many names: lunch, brunch, brown bag, high tea, luncheon, nuncheon, dim sum, almoço, déjeuner, mittagessen, hirugohan, obiad and smorgasbord, to name a few.
But what’s in a name? The things we call lunch today evolved from the Spanish word lonja, which meant “slice of ham.” That connection goes back to the 16th century and became the English “lunch” by the early 19th.

Trends. Wall Street Journal reports that the biggest trend in desserts is high protein. And the latest thing in cooking oil is produced from microalgae... Newsroom Tokyo reports that eel prices may finally be coming down after rising every year since 2017 when eel fishing was limited due to overfishing and drops in eel populations. Now most Asian eel is farmed from inception and costs are down since the industry discovered less expensive chicken eggs could be used in lieu of sharks' eggs in vitrofertilization.
Salmon's popularity is driving up prices. Two countries — Norway and Chile —account for most of the world's salmon consumed in greater numbers each year for its brain-enriching Omega-3 acids and its good cholesterol. Overfishing has depleted wild salmon and farmed salmon have increased 75 times over in Norway since 1985. Norway now has 500 million salmon, 90 per human, and is running out of shoreline for them to be farmed in.

From the August issue of Johnston Living magazine | | What’s the buzz? Residents share their experiences as beekeepers.
By Ashley Rullestad
While the Iowa DNR reports the number of native bees in Iowa continues to decline, more and more apiarists (beekeepers) are emerging to nurture the bee population. As of Jan. 1 of last year, Iowa boasted 36,000 bee colonies for operations with five or more colonies, according to the USDA. That’s a big uptick from the prior year’s 26,000 colonies and the 15,500 colonies the year before that. But who are these beekeepers, and what drives their passion? Some local apiarists share their stories.
Bee loved
Niki Smith has had a longtime fascination with, and interest in, bees.
“I think it all started from an iconic scene in the movie ‘Fried Green Tomatoes’ when character Idgie Threadgood pulled honeycomb out of a hive in a tree. Then, as an adult, I met other beekeepers and realized I, too, could become a bee charmer.”
