Good morning to you!

Welcome to an extra edition of the mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“Good morning, Shane. You hit another one out of the park today (The oak leaf and the fox, July 24, 2024). In a word, gratitude is perhaps one of the most stabilizing traits a person can embrace. Thanks for your eclectic mix of inspiration, humor, thought provocation, and more — a delectable weekday morning feast that is rich in content and exceedingly low in calories.” - John

And I am grateful for your kind words, John. - Shane

“Shane, I enjoyed your column about time, leaves and the young fox. There is a lovely poem in there (The oak leaf and the fox, July 24, 2024). I enjoy your daily column.” - Angela

Roses are red, violets are blue… . - Shane

“Shane, stretching your poetic wings this morning as you write about sitting on the porch with your coffee (The oak leaf and the fox, July 24, 2024). Love it.” - Joe

I was hoping it would be a step up from the Man from Nantucket poems. - Shane

“Shane, I just wanted you to know I think your column about your morning coffee routine, and how that led you to reflecting on your own life, was one of your best (The oak leaf and the fox, July 24, 2024). It caused me, and I’m sure most of your readers, to also pause and reflect.” - Susan

That moment hit home with me, and I was hoping it would with the Daily Umbrella readers, too. I am glad you enjoyed it. - Shane

“One of my favorites (Remembering ‘On Golden Pond,’ July 25, 2024).” Are you sure we weren’t separated at birth?” - Pat

Maybe, you old poop! - Shane

Have a thoughtful Thursday, and thanks for reading.

FEATURE STORY
Iowa State Fair concerts

By Cyote Williams

Foreigner has delighted music fans’ eardrums with their sound and style since the band formed in 1976. One of the iconic groups of the golden age of rock and roll, the band is responsible for classics such as “Juke Box Hero,” “Waiting For A Girl Like You,” “Feels Like The First Time” and the worldwide No. 1 hit, “I Want To Know What Love Is.” Understandably, a group that has been touring the world for decades would make some changes over the years. In steps keyboardist Michael Bluestein....

Comeuppance for junk food. All the government agencies and their "nutrition experts" have failed to curb Americans’ love for junk food. Until now. Suddenly it seems that Ozempic and three years of inflation have done that the old-fashioned way, by pricing junk food out of the market. For the past three years, consumers kept buying products like Doritos and Lay’s in lieu, of say, going to restaurants. No more says PepsiCo CFO Jamie Caulfield. PepsiCo’s Frito-Lay North America business dropped 4% in the latest quarter. "Consumers in recent months have been quitting big brands like Starbucks, Chips Ahoy and McDonalds" (as previously reported here). Slim Jim meat snacks and Vlasic pickles recently reported lower sales in the latest quarter and PepsiCo issued a disappointing profit outlook for its current fiscal year.

What’s the buzz?
Residents share their experiences as beekeepers.

By Rachel Harrington

While the Iowa DNR reports the number of native bees in Iowa continues to decline, more and more apiarists (beekeepers) are emerging to nurture the bee population. As of Jan. 1 of last year, Iowa boasted 36,000 bee colonies for operations with five or more colonies, according to the USDA. That’s a big uptick from the prior year’s 26,000 colonies and the 15,500 colonies the year before that. But who are these beekeepers, and what drives their passion? Some local apiarists share their stories.

Bees for self-sufficiency
Megan Haynes began beekeeping four years ago. She has seven hives at home just down the hill from her house and three at Madison County Winery. She began beekeeping because she and her husband were interested in developing a self-sufficiency lifestyle.
