Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by subscribers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“Shane, I am from Algona and never understood the Stinson Prairie fascination (Our prairie roots, July 10, 2024). Anyway, you are a morning delight. Thanks for cranking something out each morning. I know it’s not easy.” - Dan

One man’s weed is another man’s flower. That goes for prairie land… and columns. - Shane

“As a lifelong golfer, Shane, I can only say this — I had to bust my butt to be able to afford golf (A president’s golf game, July 15, 2024)! But, professionally, I also found it a great way to hit something without repercussions besides the cost of lost and/or drowned balls.” - Brad

Fair point, but do you really care about your president’s golf game? - Shane

“About 30 years ago, I walked with my sister and father as they golfed nine holes (A president’s golf game, July 15, 2024). I believe it takes great strength and stamina to carry those bags for that distance, let alone swing a club to hit a tiny ball that somehow hides in the close-cut grass. While I loved spending time with my family, I had never been more sure that golf was misnamed. A lady like me never uses that language, but I applaud their hitting a hole in one with that name. Thanks for the memory.” - Donna

I am not sure I fully follow your train of thought, but maybe our readers will. Meanwhile, I maintain that golf is a good walk spoiled, and golfing with a cart seems to remove any exercise. Regardless, I would rather see our manhood-seeking presidential candidates go face to face for 15 minutes in the octagon than play 18 holes on a golf course. But that’s just me. - Shane

“The day John F. Kennedy was shot is forever etched in my mind (A life lesson from Mr. Zear, July 16, 2024). I was in junior high, the 1 p.m. bell had just rung when, like with you, the voice came over the PA with the news. No TVs in the rooms in those days, but the radio was piped into each room for the rest of the day. I recall lots of tears. A hero, a war veteran had been killed. So many unanswered questions about the Trump shooting, just as there were about Kennedy. Let’s pray for real answers based on real facts this time.” - Alan

Needless to say, this cannot — and should not — be forgotten. Forgiven (in due time) but not forgotten. - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

PEOPLE & PETS
Bison, elk roam free

By Jackie Wilson

What was it like in Iowa’s prairie land before fast-food joints, strip malls and towering developments began pouring concrete and constructing buildings?

To find out, drive to Granger and take a step back in time to discover a herd of elk and bison at the Jester Park Elk and Bison Educational Plaza.

In the park, eight bison and eight elk can be viewed behind tall fences.

David Weidt, Polk County Conservation Ranger and Jester Park herd manager, explains why Polk County opened the park in the 1970s.

Toro, toro, toro. Blue fin tuna numbers are up five fold since bottoming out in the late 1990s. Last week, Now Japan successfully requested that quotas, imposed by world bodies of control, be raised. This year, Japanese fishermen had to end their Sea of Japan season in early May rather than July because they had met quotas. Cody Trostel, formerly of Trostel's Dish, is a top blue fin fisher on the U.S. East Coast. (NHK)

Owning a piece of history
Clarkes embrace the past in their historic home.

By Becky Kolosik

(Editor’s note: This story is part of a series called “The City Beautiful” Then and Now. Look for more in upcoming issues.)

Sitting on the front porch with his wife, Kathleen, and their three dogs, Richard Clarke says it’s hard to believe they’ve called Indianola and “Buxton Manor” home for 40 years.

The porch is a cozy gathering spot — a place to connect with family and friends over a hot cup of coffee or an ice-cold beverage.

“We love that it’s a shaded, sheltered space where we can watch our flower gardens flourish, wave to our neighbors and, most of all, embrace this amazing neighborhood and community,” says Kathleen.
