Good Friday Morning to You!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by subscribers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“As kids, my cousin and I would pretend to drive the General Lee all the time (Iconic cars from film and TV, April 10, 2023). It was so much fun! A couple other favorites include ‘The A-Team’ van and KITT from ‘Knight Rider.’ Thanks!” - Martin

I pity the fool who forgot those classics. Thanks, Martin. – Shane

“You forgot the 1984 Sheepdog from ‘Dumb and Dumber’ (Iconic cars from film and TV, April 10, 2023.) But, on a serious note, the 1932 Duesenberg in 1982’s ‘Annie’ always caught my eye!” - Kristen

Clearly, I am dumb… and dumber. - Shane

“Three movies immediately came to mind as I read your ‘Iconic car’ column (Iconic cars from film and TV, April 10, 2023). First and foremost would be the beautiful white 1970 Dodge Challenger RT/SE featured in the movie ‘Vanishing Point’ released in 1970. Second, has to be ‘Gone in 60 Seconds’ (1974). Not so much for any particular car but more for the sheer number of cars destroyed or damaged (127). Third, ‘Bullitt’ featuring the 1968 Mustang GT. (1968). Need I say more? Thanks for the memories.” - Brent

Now I have three more movies to watch. Thank you, Brent! - Shane

“Oh, Shane... the shame! How could you leave out the hot rod hearse from ‘The Munsters’? (Iconic cars from film and TV, April 10, 2023)?” - Jim

That certainly deserves to be added. - Shane

“Shane, don’t forget ‘Knight Rider’ with David Hasselhoff and his Pontiac Firebird (Iconic cars from film and TV, April 10, 2023). That car would talk to you, drive while you were sleeping, drive by itself and was ‘intuitive’ as much as could be in the 1980s. Thanks for the memory ride!” - Clint

Now that’s the one I thought I would get even more letters on. Good call, Clint. - Shane

“1959 Thunderbird from ‘77 Sunset Strip’ and the Corvette from ‘Route 66’ — both TV shows from before your time (Iconic cars from film and TV, April 10, 2023).” - Bruce

You proved it, Bruce. Iconic cars are timeless. - Shane

“I enjoyed your article about the iconic TV vehicles from our childhood (Iconic cars from film and TV, April 10, 2023). Like you, I had a toy Batmobile and Batcave. A car I remember was the white 1957 T-Bird in ‘American Graffiti.’ Although, it might have been the driver, Suzanne Somers, who I remember the most.” - Kevin

Now I am distracted, too. - Shane

“Shane, there are a couple of cars I thought of that we saw on Saturday mornings growing up (Iconic cars from film and TV, April 10, 2023). The first one was from ‘The Flintstones.’ I always thought it would be fun as a kid to make your car go by using your feet, not so much as an adult. The Flintstones’ car was called, the Flintmobile or Cavemobile back in the day. The second one was from ‘The Jetsons.’ Their vehicle wasn't a car, but it was their transportation. I always wanted one of their spaceships. I think it was called ‘The Flying Car’ back in the day. I would still like one of these. Thanks for the memories, as usual.” - Gail

What, no Mystery Machine? - Shane

“Corvettes from 1960 thru 1963 on ‘Route 66’ (Iconic cars from film and TV, April 10, 2023)! Led me to buy mine — a 1967 Roadster.” - Gary

Keep rubbing in it, Gary. - Shane

“No better example of a great car in a movie (Iconic cars from film and TV, April 10, 2023) than the British Racing Green Mustang Fastback in the 1968 ‘Bullit.’ I purchased one of my favorite new cars as a senior at Des Moines Tech High School.” - Rick

I have to ask, and I am betting that you know: Where is it now, Rick? - Shane

“Hi, Shane. Here’s a few iconic cars that you left off: Cameron’s dad’s Ferrari in ‘Ferris Bueller.’ He doesn’t even drive it; he just rubs it with a diaper. James Bond’s Aston Martin — I think this one more so than any other Bond car, but that could be a list all by itself. And lastly… the ‘family truckster’ station wagon from ‘National Lampoon’s Vacation.’ ” - Dewayne

You have a keen eye, Dewayne, and a great memory. Thanks for sharing those. - Shane

Philadelphia fans turned $1 hot dog night Wednesday into a giant food fight between left field and first baseline. More than 55,000 dogs were sold. The next Dollar Dog Night for the I Cubs will be May 9, with Berkwood Farms dogs, surely too good to throw away.

Road trip, national - Edna Lewis was, without much question, the greatest African American/soul food chef and cookbook writer. Though she spent most of her professional life in New York City and greater Atlanta, her home terroir was Orange County, Virginia. To honor the 50th anniversary of her "Edna Lewis Cookbook," Orange County has organized an Edna Lewis Food Trail. Seven cafes in the county are celebrating with the grand lady's recipes. This is only scheduled through Memorial Day, but if there is justice in the food world, it will become permanent. Orange County is about an hour and half southwest of D.C., 20 minutes west of Fredericksburg and 15 minutes north of Charlottesville.

Road trip, Iowa — Fairfield's Fishback & Stephenson Cider House makes unique and fabulous burgers. They are sourced from a local, 35-year-old herd of cattle that are finished on a diet of apple mash. They grind their burger from all muscle cuts, not just trimmings. Lettuces and kale come from Maharishi International University's Regenerative Organic Agriculture Program. On Wednesdays and Thursdays, they also smoke briskets. On Fridays and Saturdays, they also make Reubens. Their hard ciders have won big awards.

Your Clear Mortgage forecast from Jason Parkin

Warm and breezy conditions continue today. Rain moves in tonight and lingers into the earlier part of Sunday morning. Saturday and Sunday look windy, and those winds will eventually bring cooler temperatures to end the weekend. The next rain chance beyond that looks to move in sometime Wednesday.

On April 14 ...

1865: President Abraham Lincoln is shot in the head at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C. on April 14, 1865. The assassin, actor John Wilkes Booth, shouted, “Sic semper tyrannis! (Ever thus to tyrants!) The South is avenged,” as he jumped onto the stage and fled on horseback. Lincoln died the next morning.

1975: The American airlift of Vietnamese orphans to the United States ends after 2,600 children are transported to America. The operation began disastrously on April 4 when an Air Force cargo jet crashed shortly after take-off from Tan Son Nhut airbase in Saigon. More than 138 of the passengers, mostly children, were killed.

1935: In what came to be known as “Black Sunday,” one of the most devastating storms of the 1930s Dust Bowl era sweeps across the region on April 14, 1935. High winds kicked up clouds of millions of tons of dirt and dust so dense and dark that some eyewitnesses believed the world was coming to an end.

Space for the whole family

Stellner home includes room for seven.

By Lindsey Giardino

This March marks three years of the Stellner family living in Johnston. Ryan and Amber Stellner’s fourth child was born five years ago, and it was time to upgrade to a larger house.
Amber teaches kindergarten at Madison Elementary in Des Moines, so the couple looked for a house on the northern side of the metro.

“We visited about 15 houses throughout Ankeny, Urbandale and Johnston,” Stellner explains. “The last one was in Green Meadows West in Johnston. Just before we turned down the street toward the house, we saw a playground and trail. Then, as we turned, we saw a tree-lined cul-de-sac and a dad playing outside with his kids. After we pulled into the driveway, we heard lots more kids outside playing. This was already checking most of the boxes for a family with four young kids.”

The house they found has a three-car garage, gas fireplace, laundry on the main level, an open floor plan and enough bedrooms for everyone, including Ryan’s mother.
