Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by subscribers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“My J.C. Higgins was a monster bicycle and heavy but was much cooler when my mom had Dave Markley add a banana seat and taller handlebars to make it somewhat close to a Schwinn Stingray for us husky types (Wheels keep on turning (April 24, 2024).” - Rex

What ever happened to banana seats and chopper handlebars? Those rocked. - Shane

“I enjoyed today's column, ‘Let us love not in word or speech but in deed and truth’ (Mindful of our words, April 30, 2024). Saw this on a gravestone in Woodland Cemetery: ‘Words Suggest. Actions Show.’ ” - Mike

Powerful words, set in stone. Thank you, Mike. - Shane

“Good afternoon, Shane. As a woman of very strong faith, I can't thank you enough for what you published this morning and for the courage to speak truth (Mindful of our words, April 30, 2024). Praise Jesus! Enough said.” - Rose

There is a message in there for all of us, I hope. - Shane

“Growing up on a farm challenged the May Basket deliverer (May Day baskets, May 1, 2024). My youngest sister persisted, and Mom would drive her from one ‘Four Corners’ farmhouse to the next. She would even turn off the car's headlights, and creep along, minimizing the tell-tale gravel crunch of the tires. My sister is much older but still continues this revered tradition of friendship and love.” - John, a former southeast Iowa farm kid

Tell-tale gravel crunch? That sounds like something made by Kellogg’s. - Shane

“Tammy is the one who delivers the baskets (May Day baskets, May 1, 2024)? Next you're going to tell me there's no Santa.” - Mike

Relax, Cupid. The Easter Bunny will be back next year. - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

The Stuffed Olive

By Jackie Wilson

As the Court Avenue district seeks solutions to revitalize the area, one restaurant – The Stuffed Olive — is eager to showcase its food and drink offerings.

The Stuffed Olive, a martini bar and restaurant, found success just off Third Street — so much so that the owners were turning away up to 200 people on weekends. The solution? To move kitty-corner to their new location at the Court District building.

Competing for time
Residents share how relationships are the “win” in sporting together.

By Ashley Rullestad

Lisa and Carson Hattel and their three daughters, senior Emma, sophomore Hannah and seventh-grader Addison, are quick to join a sports team, especially if it involves running some bases. Lisa and Carson both grew up playing baseball and softball, and all the girls play softball, too, and have been since they were in elementary school.

“One of my favorite memories is going as a family to Indiana to watch Addison play in the all-stars team for Johnston’s softball,” Lisa says. “They were even on ESPN+ for the championship game. It was a great experience for all of us.”

Higher costs and inflation-weary consumers, part II. The big winner in the supermarket wars is now Aldi. The German-owned chain with ten metro stores is drawing bargain hunting customers away from bigger stores. Foot traffic at Aldi stores in March was up 26% over the prior year. That's considerably higher than the other industry leaders - 6% at Kroger and 15% at Trader Joe’s. (WSJ)

Gin is Japan’s fastest growing food export to the U.S. and Roku is its prophet. Roku is the Japanese word for six and Roku gin is made with six botanicals — sakura flower, sakura leaf, yuzu peel, sencha tea (green tea), gyokuro tea (refined green tea) and sanshō pepper. None are traditional to London dry gin recipes and all are indigenous to Japan. Either/Or pours it locally and Fareway carries it in West Des Moines.
