Good morning to you!

If you were asked to define the word “peace,” what words would you use? To make this seemingly simple request a bit tougher, try not to use things or actions to define peace but only a word or two — and don’t seek help from Merriam-Webster.

What words came to mind? For some of you, I am guessing comfort or relaxation. Others of you may have said clarity or harmony. A few may have said quietness or solitude.

Maybe peace is best defined in song.

Jack Tempchin wrote a hit song that the Eagles recorded in 1972 called “Peaceful Easy Feeling.” The lyrics included, “'Cause I gotta peaceful easy feeling; And I know you won't let me down; 'Cause I'm already standing; On the ground.”

Tom Scholz of the band Boston wrote the song “Peace of Mind” and recorded it in 1977. He penned, “I understand about indecision; But I don't care if I get behind; People livin' in competition; All I want is to have my peace of mind.”

And how can you write about peace without a mention of John Lennon? His “Give Peace a Chance” was recorded during a tumultuous time in 1969 with a small group of friends in a room at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montreal. The words are repetitive but simple: “All we are saying, is give peace a chance.”

Now, back to those actions that bring people peace. Through the years, I have learned how we all seek peace in different ways, and that’s not a bad thing. Yoga. Prayer. Exercise. Going for a drive on a country road. Walking in the woods. Playing video games. Mowing the lawn. If you can find personal peace in a way that doesn’t hurt others and isn’t illegal, then I am generally all for it. Generally.

It all starts with understanding what peace means to you.

Catholic nun Mother Teresa was the founder of the Missionaries of Charity and may have understood peace better than most. Her advice?

“Peace begins with a smile.”

Have a terrific Tuesday, and thanks for reading.

Trip of a lifetime
Residents share stories of their dreams-come-true vacations.

By Lindsey Giardino

For some people, vacationing is a part of their routine. They plan, take and enjoy numerous trips to see the sights and “get away” from the usual hustle and bustle of life. They enjoy good times and make fond memories. They share photos and stories, but it isn’t long before they are looking forward to their next excursion. For some others, a vacation turns out to be much more than that — it is a dream come true, and, no matter how many vacations may follow, none will ever compare. It is a trip of a lifetime.

A fishing experience for the books
When a friend told Andrew DeVries about an amazing trip he took to Guatemala for sailfish fishing, Andrew knew he had to do it himself.

“He told me a group of guys goes to this specific location every two years for sailfish fishing,” he says. “Me being an avid fisherman, I couldn’t resist. As soon as he told me about the location and fishing, I was hooked and wanted to experience this amazing opportunity.”

For the next two years, Andrew planned for the once-in-a-lifetime trip.

James Montgomery of Manor Farmhouse Cheddar believes his Friesian dairy cows graze on the land that once was Camelot, in Somerset County, England. That county also includes Cheddar, the town that started it all, when “once there was a spot, for one brief shining moment.” Cheese Shop (833 42nd St., Des Moines) carries the cheese in Des Moines.

Wine and cheese deals: Django (1420 Locust St., Des Moines) has specials all night Tuesdays on wine, cheese and more... Trostel's Greenbriar (5810 Merle Hay Road, Johnston) has half priced bottles of wine on Wednesdays... Cheese Bar (2925 Ingersoll Ave., Des Moines) offers $5 glasses of Champagne and sparkling wine, as well as $5 bites Tuesday through Friday 2-5 p.m.
