Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by subscribers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“Hello, Shane. I am replying to the featured list in this month's issue of CITYVIEW (Top 50 rock songs, March 12, 2024). I am glad to see Chuck Berry mentioned as the pioneer, but I think the wrong song was picked for No. 37, as it was not representative of his influence in changing pop music to rock. That song should have been ‘Roll Over Beethoven,’ the ultimate rebellion against classical and pop music then.”- Carl

Good point. And we somehow left out “My Ding-a-Ling,” too. - Shane

“I gave up the fat wallet in my hip pocket when sitting on it started to cause sciatica (What’s in your wallet?, March 13, 2024). Now I carry a minimalist wallet in my front pocket. It has my ID, a few cards and a few bills, all sorted by denomination and facing the same way. I also use Apple Pay, which is more secure than actual cards because it generates a unique card number for every transaction and can’t be compromised by card skimmers.” - William

Sciatica? Sounds like you used to have too much cash in that “fat wallet.” - Shane

“Just a quick email to thank you for the Daily Umbrella email you and your staff send. I appreciate the ‘lame’ jokes that are great for old dads! Your daily column is generally enjoyable and sometimes even thought-evoking/provoking (Cargo carriers, March 18, 2024). I like the Food Dude tidbits. After seeing Monday's tidbits regarding all-you-can-eat wings at Tito’s Lounge, we headed there last night. Great find! Wings are good, and they have wonderful flatbread pizzas.” - Jeff

Lame jokes? Generally enjoyable columns? I am glad you liked the wings. - Shane

“Shane, as a veteran of multiple trips from I-35 west across Iowa and Nebraska on I-80/I-76, Kansas on I-70, and Oklahoma/Texas on I-40 and even once across South Dakota on I-90, I'll vote for Iowa as the least boring (Cargo carriers, March 18, 2024). How many times can a person be excited by U P Bailey yard at North Platte, the original Cadillac Ranch west of Amarillo, the rattlesnake ranch in northwest Kansas, or even the Corn Palace in South Dakota? I finally figured out why, when I was really young, my father liked to drive at night. Even if most of those trips were north on Highway 65 across Iowa (no interstate highways yet), everyone else in the car was asleep and not groaning about the scenery — or lack thereof. To each their own. Happy travels!” - Chuck

I think you crafted our new state slogan: “Iowa. We are the least boring.” - Shane

“I always enjoy your morning words of wisdom but have never commented before today (Piggy banks, March 19, 2024). Yes, my husband still has a piggy bank, but his is a glass milk jar. In my past years, this jar would be filled with change all year, and then, at Christmas, Grandpa would proudly bring out his bank and place it in the middle of the table surrounded by grandchildren. Then it was their task to divide the wealth between them. Grandpa insisted that they leave a few coins as 'seed money.’ The grandkids are all grown now, but this remains a precious memory for them.” - Jeanie

Now that’s what I call milk money. - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

ART NEWS
Worlds in collision

By Jim Duncan

Cecily Brown, whose one-person show at the Des Moines Art Center (DMAC) in 2016 was a major coup for the museum, is flying high after her “Death and the Maid” exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. New York Times art critic Roberta Smith wrote a review titled “I Was Wrong About Cecily Brown.”

Smith compared Brown to El Greco, Hieronymus Bosch, Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud in her apology for not appreciating her genius 23 years earlier. When we interviewed Brown in Des Moines, the vegetarian painter had just dined at Machine Shed, a very meat forward café. What did she have there? “Lots and lots of cocktails.”

Tipping news. Some highlights from a survey by Wallet Hub: Nearly three in four Americans think tipping has gotten out of control; 64% of people think a tip is something you should give when you feel like it instead of something you always have to give; nearly three in five Americans think businesses are replacing employee salaries with customer tips; More than one in four Americans tip less when they’re presented with a tip suggestion screen; 78% think automatic service charges should be banned; half of Americans say they often leave a tip due to social pressure rather than good service.
