“Good morning from Florida, where as they say ‘woke’ goes to die. It might be MAGA and despicable of me to refer to you of as woke, but why should any long-established community change significantly to accommodate those who wish to join it (The American language, Feb. 25, 2024)? The few times I've attended Catholic services, they've offered me a blessing and Communion. If you moved to a Latin American country, you'd best brush up on those three semesters of Spanish. How foolish would I be to move North Sentinel Island and expect them to not kill and maybe eat me? ‘Bienvenida a america ahora aprende ingle!’ Thanks for a thoughtful wake-up.” - John

“Hi, Shane. I enjoyed your column this morning (The American language, Feb. 25, 2024). I remember my first trip to Canada and noticed that on the signs. French was on top followed by English. I have always been surprised that America does not reciprocate the gesture with Canada or Mexico. Now 101, he recalls a “blessed” life.

More than a century ago, Richard Snyder, now 101, was born north of Dallas Center.
He was raised, as he describes, in a wonderful home. He grew up on a farm with six brothers and sisters, attending a one-room country school. By the time he was in high school, the family had moved, and he graduated from Van Meter High School in 1941. In school, he had a crush on someone who didn’t even know he existed — a “tall, thin girl with long, black, curly hair” named Lucy. On the farm, he worked hard, and attributed that work ethic to his father.

Campaign Grain Chain: India Prime Minister Narendra Modi is personally leading a new government push to grow and eat more millet, calling for Indians to have at least one meal a day featuring the hardy grain. Millet is used in breads and porridge much like wheat but is not threatened like wheat and rice crops by higher temperatures. (NHK World); Bee Wilson of Wall Street Journal thinks she has discovered a super rice. "I met the Italian producer of Acquerello, an incredibly expensive risotto rice, who told me that her rice was so creamy you hardly needed to add butter or Parmesan. I was skeptical, but she was right, as I discovered to my amazement when I took some of her rice home and cooked with it. Each grain was perfectly separate and yet velvety, as if the rice itself had been injected with cream. The sad part is it costs nearly $20 a pound." We found it for about half that price at both Walmart and Amazon on line and even less at supermarketitaly.com
From the Iowa Restaurant Association's 2024 report: Eighty percent of adults are interested in taking advantage of discounts on slower days of the week and off-peak times of day; 90% of consumers say that they go to restaurants to experience dishes and drinks they have never tried before.
Specials: Machine Shed (11151 Hickman Road, Urbandale) has an all you can eat fried fish special on Fridays... Fong's Pizza (223 4th St., Des Moines) serves slices until 3 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights... Winn's Pizza & Steakhouse (122 W Ashland Ave., Indianola) serves chicken fried steak specials on Sundays.

| Weekly fuel report | | | The price of regular unleaded gasoline rose 5 cents, averaging $3.06 across Iowa according to AAA. Prices are down 9 cents from a year ago. The national average on Wednesday was $3.29, up 2 cents from last week’s price.
Retail diesel prices in Iowa fell 3 cents this week with a statewide average of $3.80. One year ago, diesel prices averaged $3.99 in Iowa. The current Iowa diesel price is 27 cents lower than the national average of $4.07.
Wholesale ethanol held steady and is currently priced at $2.16.
Propane prices averaged $1.59 per gallon statewide.
Home heating oil prices averaged $3.14 per gallon statewide.
Natural gas prices rose 10 cents at the Henry Hub reporting site and are currently priced at $1.86/MMbtu |
