“Shane, while reminiscing about favorite cereals I had a couple of other things to add to your list (Cereal box prizes, Feb. 12, 2024). First of all, my favorite was Sugar Corn Pops. (Still are, but I can’t remember the last time I ate them as I usually have steel cut oats when I do have cereal.) First, I remember on the back of boxes were 45 records, or something to that order. I think they played OK, but if it got a bend in it, it definitely made for a bumpy sound. Also, another treat for my two brothers and me when we would go camping was the mini-multiple choice packages. After mom would purchase these at the grocery store, we would each take turns and mark our box choices for the camping trip. It always worked out for each of us to get our top two favorites if not all our favorites.” - Lu Anne
Those are two great cereal memories. I also remember the one or two boxes of awful cereal in those mini-boxes that nobody seemed to want. And did you ever try using the mini-box as a bowl like the package suggested? I cried over that spilt milk. - Shane
“After reading your column on breakfast cereals and the toys they used to include, one thought did cross my mind (Cereal box prizes, Feb. 12, 2024). Did you wait until almost all of the cereal was consumed to retrieve the toy from the bottom of the box, or did you immediately pour the entire contents into a big bowl to get at the toy right away? Silly question. What kid could wait that long to play with a free toy? I'll bet you were a big fan of Cracker Jacks, too.” - Bob
That is a silly question, Bob. I dug in elbow-deep in the full cereal box, of course. And as for the sugar-coated popcorn and peanuts, “the more you eat, the more you want.” - Shane
“I'm still waiting for a 5-in-1 truck that I used a mail-in coupon from Post Cereal and a dollar for (Cereal box prizes, Feb. 12, 2024). It's only been 60 or so years, but I still check Informed Delivery each day to see if it still might be forwarded from Saddle Brook to Iowa. It is the U.S. Postal Service, so I still have hope.” - John

When walking into a bar, an instant vibe is set off. Is it a dive or too high-end? Or does it get lost in the shuffle, trying to please everyone?
At the Cork, the vibe matches what they do successfully — focus on unique wines. The Cork 50131, located at 6205 Merle Hay Road in the Johnston Town Center, opened December 2022.
The Cork offers about 175 different wines. Posted on their chalkboard is a list of 15-20 rotating wines by the glass, including bubbly, whites, rose and reds. Wall Street Journal tracked the Consumer Price Index over the last 12 months and found that the biggest food price hike, of 29%, was for frozen drinks and juices. The biggest price drop, also just under 29%, was for eggs. Among fresh fruits and vegetables, the biggest price hike was for tomatoes and the largest drop was for lettuce. Among drinks, the biggest price rise was for carbonated beverages. In the meat category, beef and veal prices totally outpaced everything else. Within the services category, car insurance rates grew the most.
As predicted here last year, Japanese seafood is re-focusing on the U.S. market. Japanese scallops are being advertised on TV in Des Moines for the first time. Coming mostly from Hokkaido's legendary fishing waters, Japanese scallops are often considered the best in the world. China has banned them, so, their loss... our gain. (Japan Times)
