Good morning to you!

Welcome to an extra edition of the mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by subscribers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“Hi, Shane. I enjoyed your column (Bats, Oct. 31, 2023). It was nice to see them get the good publicity they deserve. Many years ago, in our previous home, I found an injured bat. I thought it was too cold outside for a successful release, so I cared for it over the winter, making sure it was warm and well-fed. I even featured it on Christmas photo cards to select friends. Happily, it recovered in time for a spring release. (Even though things turned out OK, it probably wasn't a good idea, and you should NOT try this at home!) Around the same time, I had a pet rose hair tarantula named Rosebud. She became pretty tame, and I could handle her — albeit very carefully. One day, she was sitting on my bare arm when the doorbell rang. It's not a quick process to disengage a tarantula from your skin, so I answered the door ‘wearing’ her on my wrist. It was a neighbor who had no clue I owned a spider, and he almost set a record for a backwards jump! Good times, good times.” - Carolyn

How about snakes? You like snakes? - Shane

“Was just reading your column regarding classic rock (Classic rock, Nov. 13, 2023). I never got into rock, but I discovered the other day a note I had written to myself years ago to look up some Grady Tate vocals. I remember that I did then and became a fan. He is probably not even on your radar. I just looked him up again and found numerous articles on him. I got ahold of some YouTube music and became a fan all over again. What a talent. Google him and you will find a myriad of articles on all facets of his talents and life. Wish we had more calming, gentle voices like his.” - Margaret

The only Grady I knew was on “Sanford and Son,” and he didn’t appear to have the talent of Grady Tate. - Shane

“Shane, I enjoy your columns. As far as classic rock goes, I travel extensively and always hope to hear local music, but when I was in Ireland the pubs would either play American classic rock or country (Classic rock, Nov. 13, 2023). I’m currently in Belize, and same thing here — classic rock. Most tourists here are ages 20-40, so it’s not like they are catering to us baby boomers. World-wide appeal for our favorite music!” - Rebecca

“Rock and roll ain’t noise pollution!” - Shane

“I am more annoyed by people who come to work sick and hack and cough and spread their bug to everyone else trying to be no-sick-day-for-me martyr (Sick days, Nov. 14, 2023). Others get sick because of them, and that's a real productivity killer.” - Brad

There are extremes on both ends of this subject, like most things in life. - Shane

Have a thoughtful Thursday, and thanks for reading.

Developers in Tokyo seek to cut down 3,000 historic ginkgo trees in the center of town and build a skyscraper. Tokyo doesn't have much green space, so protests are avid. Even UNESCO is lobbying against the plan.

Dengue fever has killed 1,200 people in Bangladesh so far this fall, the most in history. Thousands more are hospitalized. These are all-time records. The disease is carried by evil mosquitoes that love record rainfalls.

The answer to yesterday's riddle:

What does an author do if his dog starts eating his manuscript? HE TAKES THE WORDS RIGHT OUT OF HIS MOUTH! Or, He says it was only a ruff (like bark) draft! - Gail Tomlinson. Or, Stop the canine and press him to cough up the story! - Rex Post.

Or, a poem from Carolyn Rogers:

There once was an author named Dwight,
Whose work the critics called trite.
Better his words not get written,
Than to find himself bitten.
So from the dog and his book he took flight!

Today's riddle
