Waiting for a nibble: Kids of all ages tried their hands at fishing at the Annual Cops and Bobbers Fishing Event held recently in Ankeny at the Prairie Ridge Sports Complex Shelter House. This free event, hosted by the Ankeny Police Foundation, was a catch and release event that drew a crowd of 100 youngsters and their parents from the Ankeny area. Many local businesses supported this by donating food, prizes, and shirts. Ankeny police officers volunteered their time to fish side by side with the kids, building positive relationships and teaching the them how to bait, cast and catch a fish. Prizes from local business partner Honest Wrenches were given for biggest and smallest fish. Main sponsor of the event was Greater Iowa Credit Union. Photo courtesy of the Ankeny Police Foundation. NASCAR CUP SERIES CHAMPIONSHIP RACE: Ryan Blaney secures first career NASCAR Cup championship

US Department of Agriculture forecast a Florida orange crop with a 30% increase over a year ago. That reverses a 15-year slide of lower harvests and higher prices. Growers have finally found a therapy for Huanglongbing disease which has been killing oranges in the US for 15 years. Also, the groves avoided most hurricanes this year.

Wall Street Journal reported that retro fits on combines and tractors can add cutting-edge technology without spending $700,000 for a new tractor. A mere $20,000 retrofit can modernize 50-year-old equipment. Farmers are avoiding new tractors because their incomes are under pressure from sliding commodity markets. Corn and wheat futures are down 29% since the start of the year, while soybean prices have fallen 14%.

Pizza and Peronis are half priced tonight at Centro (1003 Locust St., Des Moines).
