Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by subscribers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“Your Oct. 17 Daily Umbrella column about a four-day work week, among other things, just happened to take me all the way back to last Saturday (Four-day school week, Oct. 17, 2023). On that fateful Saturday, my aunt and uncle from Oregon were visiting Iowa along with a host of cousins from Omaha. We were dining at a lovely café in Indianola, tossing out stories of memories and time gone by. It so happens that both my aunt and uncle were school teachers and my 80-something-year-old uncle somehow remembered a report I had written in 1967 when I was in fourth grade. He asked me about said report and, perhaps remarkably, I had access to it in the form of a clipping cut from the pages of the Des Moines Tribune. Evidently, my teacher at the time, Mrs. Allison, was amused enough to send my report to whom I believe was columnist Elizabeth Clarkson Zwart. (Look her up). I’m not sure my 1967 report is actually relevant to your column, Shane. But I get it.” - Brent

It is quite relevant, Brent, and I thank you for sending it. I appreciate the “convesassion.” - Shane

“I like self-checkout for the convenience (Self-checkout kiosks, Oct. 23, 2023). We are fortunate in small-town Iowa to have these. I was in a Walmart recently where the police sat at the checkouts and checked every bag. It was in a low-income area of the community, and it was evident the people were annoyed, but used to, the procedure. I would never want that to happen here.” - Pete

It’s unfortunate that security is even needed. Thou shall not steal seems so simple. - Shane

“I go to stores to be served by them, not to serve them (Self-checkout kiosks, Oct. 23, 2023). If they want me to do their work, put me on the payroll.” - Bill

So I guess I won’t be seeing you at the grill-your-own-steak places? - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

Rain chances linger through the morning commute today, then colder air starts to move into Iowa. We may see some light rain late Saturday afternoon and evening, and then we may see some flurries or a mix Sunday afternoon. Chilly as we move toward November.

New Zealand dairy farmers are feeling a sting with China's dragging economy cutting into dairy imports. Twenty percent year to date (Wall Street Journal).

Food halls are growing rapidly in the U.S. suburbs. Wall Street Journal reports the U.S. has 360 now and 120 more are opening by the end of 2024. Closely related to food courts, food halls contain a choice of many cuisines in a shared dining room. Unlike food courts, they usually eschew national chain brands. WSJ says they are hot now because the burbs have a lunch clientele, not just night time, since COVID increased the numbers who work from home.

Omaha's Inner Rail Food Hall, in the former Ak-Sar-Ben race track, has eight local, mostly ethnic vendors with room for expansion. I was reminded of old inner city markets in Philadelphia, Baltimore and Boston more than of mall food courts. (The developer is from Philly.) In Des Moines metro, food courts are disappearing at Valley West and Merle Hay malls.

Leachmon's Pit Stop BBQ, a superb family operation, has a sign up saying they are moving to NE 14th Street with no timeline announced.

Weekly Fall Colors Report

Still time to enjoy fall beauty in northeast Iowa. Lots of vibrant colors can be seen throughout the forest. Oaks are turning red, yellow and bronze. Many trees are starting to drop their leaves.

Peak fall color has passed in north central and northwest Iowa, but there is still color on the trees. Oaks are turning color. Many trees are losing leaves.

Oaks are at peak fall color in central Iowa. Bur oaks are yellow; white and red oaks are crimson and combinations of green and red. Strong winds last weekend stripped away leaves from many of the early changers like cottonwood, walnut, elm, and hackberry. It's a little past peak season, but there is still good color.

Peak fall color in southeast Iowa. Maples are red, yellow and orange. Oaks are still mostly green, but are changing.

It's a great time to see a variety of colors on the landscape in south central Iowa. Maples are showing bright colors. Dogwood and sumac are bright red to deep purple. Oaks are showing bright reds to deep purples.

Still plenty of color to show in west central Iowa. Expect lots of reds, purples and yellow through mid-week. Bitternut hickories are at their peak and will continue to show deep yellow/brown. The reds and purples will disappear quickly with any wind or rain.

This week will be a color show in southwest Iowa. White, red and black oaks are starting to turn color.
