“I hit a deer with my car about 20 years ago (Oh, deer, Oct. 10, 2023). The road was a two-lane with almost no shoulder and 5-foot-tall grass on one side. The deer jumped out, and I left two perfectly straight skid marks in my lane. I followed the advice: ‘don't swerve.’ When I stopped, I saw a car in the other lane. I did not see that car until I was stopped. My complete focus was on the deer, and I would have either been rolled over in the ditch or hit the other car head-on if I had swerved. The other deer story was about a wise old buck that I saw on the shoulder of the road as I came around a sharp, wooded turn. The buck stood on the shoulder of the road and looked straight at me as I went past it at 50 mph. My wife and I both described the look in the buck's face as ‘I am waiting for you to get by before I cross.’ ” - George

 | I found this vine winding through my euonymus alatus, known variously as winged spindle, winged euonymus, or burning bush, and was surprised to see these large seed pods hanging from it. My go-to plant expert, Dan Juffer, informed me it was a climbing milkweed. |

Wall Street Journal reported that the cost of entertainment rose considerably more than fuel, food or housing in the last three years. It's called "funflation," and it's serious. In a WSJ poll, 26% of people said they no longer had any budget for entertainment, up 10% from three years ago. But those who did spent more than ever. Five touring acts — Taylor Swift, Bruce Springsteen, Elton John, Harry Styles and Ed Sheeran all grossed $100 million in ticket sales on tour. Previously, more than two artists had never done that in the same year. Swift grossed $1 billion. That is just the legit ticket market. Swift ticket prices averaged far over $1,000 per ticket on the second hand market.
Jethro's opened their latest area store this week by the Iowa Events Center. They always have had a good nose for where the action was.
The relentless serial killer of restaurants, road construction, struck again. This time it took the life of Pad Thai Garden on Eighth Street in West Des Moines. That construction project is now threatening El Fogon, Dunkin' Donuts, Jimmy John's and Gilroy's. Help them if you can. It's inconvenient but you can get there.
