Traveling as I have for 60-plus years, I've noticed that cars seem to be much more dependable today than they were in my early days of traveling (Dollars and sensors, Sept. 26, 2023). As you and your daughter found out, you are fortunate to have a friend who could fix the car for you. Repairing a car on the road is not as simple as it once was. For years, I used to change my own oil until I had a Ford Probe that was next to impossible to crawl underneath. Since then, I always go to a shop to have the oil changed.” - John

“I don’t care if you’re allergic to gluten, or sensitive or gluten free or whatever (The bread you eat, Oct. 2, 2023). In my opinion, if you don’t eat bread, you cannot be trusted. Especially if you don’t eat the white, squishy Wonder bread type.” - Lori

“It is a bit frustrating to come upon a stop light when in a hurry but I love it when it happens to the driver who passes you at a high rate of speed and they come to a stop light (Traffic lights, Oct. 3, 2023)! Can you imagine their frustration!” - Diane

“I was chuckling when I read your column (Superstitions, Oct. 4, 2023). My superstition is crazy stupid. When I am working out on my treadmill, as the timer starts getting closer to 13 minutes, I will look away until it passes. As if I will stumble and fall off the treadmill if I glance at the number 13.” - Kevin

“The only one we drummed into us as children is if we sat too close to the TV, we would get radiation poisoning (Superstitions, Oct. 4, 2023). If that is true, my glow is not due to my healthy vigor. Dang it!” - Lori

Lzaza (1409 23rd St., Des Moines) has reopened. The South Asian buffet is as good as any in the metro and it's offered daily. On Sundays, an impromptu children's fashion show usually breaks out.
Wong's Chopsticks (5500 Merle Hay Road, Des Moines) has a good dim sum service on Saturday and Sunday. No carts but lots of choices among the classics.
Big Grove (555 17th St., Des Moines) is advertising a Hawkeye-Purdue watch party Saturday. Sports bars are struggling with the streaming services taking markets away from satellite and cable services and adding more costs to their overhead.

FROM KCCI: Truckers block lanes to stop high-speed police chase in southwest Iowa
UNION COUNTY, Iowa — Authorities in southwest Iowa say two semi-truck drivers helped stop a high-speed chase Wednesday on Highway 34. Union County Sheriff's Office deputies located a woman suspected of assault driving westbound on the highway. When they attempted to pull Marissa Waigand over, she "intentionally drove into the south ditch at a high rate of speed, then re-entered Hwy 34 eastbound reaching speeds of 100 mph," according to a news release from the sheriff's office. ... | Weekly Fall Color Report | | | Fall in Iowa delivers a stunning spectacle of fall colors: red, yellow, orange, and purple leaves abound. Enjoy a fall drive and take in all the beautiful colors!
Lots of vibrant colors in northeast Iowa from sugar maple, sumac, Virginia creeper, ash, walnut, basswood and cottonwood. This week and next will be best to enjoy a fall leaf-peeper road trip to the beautiful Driftless Region.
Sumac, dogwoods, Virginia creeper, and poison ivy are showing red in north central and northwest Iowa. Hard maples are showing more orange and some red.
Hard maples are showing red, yellow and orange in some areas in central Iowa. Sumac are bright red and crimson. Drought stress is causing some early leaf loss which will reduce overall colors.
Scattered white ash are showing some purple in southeast Iowa. Urban maples are starting to show red, yellow, and orange.
Coffee trees are starting to turn yellow in south central Iowa. Drought stressed maples are changing color, especially in urban areas.
Shrubs and trees are turning color on drier slopes in west central Iowa. Fall prairie flowers are in bloom.
White ash are turning purple in southwest Iowa, along with dry slope cottonwoods. Most species that turn yellow (cottonwood, silver maple, black walnut, hackberry, elm, buttonbush) have started to turn.
